A road trip with a couple has never been this annoying. I miss Aeliana just like I had anticipated, but she didn’t want to come with me, and that should have been my first alarm. She has not responded to a single message of mine telling her how I miss her already, and it’s well over a day since I left.

I could barely focus with Alpha Blackthorn but thankfully, all negotiations were handled over virtual meetings and this arrangement was purely a formality. He welcomed us into his home and has been a good host, as good a host as you’d expect an old geyser stuck in his ways to be. His two sons didn’t sit in on our meeting, but his daughter did, Wendy Blackthorn appears to be his pride and joy. I didn’t expect that from him, but I kid you not, this man was being used as a cameraman when we arrived.

Formalising the alliance legally took us about thirty minutes, after which Alpha Blackthorn invited us to lunch. I would rather have been back on the road by now, but we stayed, because it felt impolite to decline when Alpha Blackthorn had been very accommodating towards us. We’re still at the lunch table, making slight conversation.

“For Christ’s sake, Wendyland.” Silas groans, “The man is going to choke.”

Alpha Blackthorn’s daughter hasn’t stopped staring and grinning at me since we arrived, I’d be cool about it, but knowing who my mate is, she probably smelled this interaction all the way back in Mooncrest.

Wendy laughs, ignoring her older brother. “You’re so handsome, Alpha Kingston.” She says, biting her lip. “And my daddy likes you, we’d make a cute couple, don’t you think so?”

“He’s married,” Danielle tells her.

Her smile doesn’t fade, she leans in close. “Was it political? If yes, you can take another political marriage, no?” She pouts.

“No,” I instantly assert. Wendy appears to be interested in me, so I’d best not joke with that. “We are a love match, my wife is my mate.”

“Really?”

“She’s also a true Luna,” Danielle tells her.

“Wow,” Silas gasps. “How did you get one of those? Is there some bond ritual to perform?”

“I want to be a true Luna,” Wendy says. “My mom was a true Luna, so I have a better chance at it.”

“Not how it works, Wendyland.” Her other brother snarls, but all she does is stick her tongue out at him. “But do tell us how one can acquire a true Luna,”

“I’ve known Aeliana my whole life,” I tell them.

“Aeliana,” Alpha Blackthorn repeats, turning to his daughter. “Darling don’t you have a friend by that name from Mooncrest? Must be a popular name out there.”

Actually, it’s not.

At least not in the way my Aeliana spells hers.

Wendy huffs, “Aeliana is not my friend, Daddy. You hired her to tutor me.”

“She liked you,” he counters.

Wendy shrugs, “Only because you paid her.”

I feel inclined to ask, from what I know Wendy has not left the pack in years, her father keeps her close. “Are you by chance talking about Aeliana Va-I mean Hartley?” I correct myself.

“Yes!” Wendy gasps, gaping at me now. “Do you know her?”

“That’s my Luna,” I proudly say, the fact still making my heart race every time I say or remember it.

“Aww, really?” Her eyes light up. “You’re so lucky, your kids are going to come out ready to recite history books.”

Danielle laughs, and so does Alpha Blackthorn. “Lovely girl,” he says. “She got my darling daughter interested in studies, how is she these days?”

“She’s great.” I nod.

“Aw, now I really have to visit Mooncrest. Can I, Daddy?” Wendy asks, slapping her father’s shoulder repeatedly. I’d like to see Aeliana again, I never got to show her my degree when we graduated because she was at that stupid convention for new-age teaching.”

“You’re welcome anytime,” I offer, once again impressed with Aeliana’s work. This is even more reason why she should get into VU, she’s brilliant. “I’m sure Aeliana would love to see you.”

“I can’t wait to tell Aston!” She giggles.

I pause, Ashton. That’s a male’s name. “Who?”

“Noah’s boyfriend,” she says, my heart finally settling. “He mentioned she was looking for her. Those two have a very strange bond.”

“Strange?” Rowan asks, his eyes cutting to me. It is strange for us because we’ve never seen Aeliana with a female friend before, but their friendship is quite the normal female bond from what I’ve seen.

Wendy nods, “Yeah, do you not find the whole murder suspect thing strange?”

Murder?

“What?” I frown.

“You don’t know.”

“No, what are you trying to say, Wendy?”

Her mouth drops and she shakes her head. “Nothing, I should go and see if lunch is ready.” She says, pushing off

her chair.

“We are having lunch,” Leon, her other brother says. “Sit down.”

“Dessert?” She nervously laughs, “Our cook makes an amazing pumpkin pie.” She sighs, desperately trying to flee like she didn’t just say my wife was involved in a murder case.

“Tell them, darling.” Alpha Blackthorn says, his voice soft but she sits down instantly. “Alpha Alpha Kingston is our ally now we don’t lie to our allies or keep secrets from them.”

Wendy frowns, “Are you sure, Daddy?”

“Go ahead.”

“Okay, this is all alleged because Aeliana wouldn’t hurt a fly but..” she trails off, eyes flickering around the table.

Danielle leans forward, “But?”

“Four years ago, someone died at the university, and they couldn’t find who did it.”

“What does that have to do with his luna?” Silas snickers, “Get to the point, Wendyland.”

“Don’t rush me,” she snarls, staring him up and down. “I’m getting there.” She flips her hair over her shoulder and reclines in her seat, staring at me like she’s choosing her words carefully. “Aeliana and Noah happen to have grown so much closer after the incident. Incident being Drayton dying.” She sighs, “Drayton was obsessed with Noah, everyone knew that, and allegedly he and his friends had a bet to see who could sleep with the teacher’s aids quicker, but Aeliana was obviously not an easy target but Noah? She likes being around..you know?”

Rowan hums in approval, he knows Noah the best.

“Anyway, so Drayton died the night he was supposedly on a date with Noah, there were pictures of them together, but they proved nothing because Aeliana and Noah claimed they were together, and three people confirmed their alibi.”

I shake my head, her words are making sense and at the same time, they aren’t. “I’m not following.”
