Chapter 238

AELIANA

The fundraiser was a hit.

I haven’t been this happy about something in a long time. I found the kind of fulfilment I do from teaching in it, it felt good to do something that benefited so many kids not just for a day but for a long time. Pack activities might just be my favourite thing about being Luna, and I hate to admit it, but Mom was right. It is an honour, all I had to do was stop viewing it as a weapon, and I was set.

Around nine yesterday, we called it a night, dropped off a few kids in the limo we hired, and came back home. Kingston and I were past our drunk in the cinema until four in the morning when Maddox found us. He woke us up and scolded us to commemorate his return.

We’ve been up since then, sprawled in the living room where others joined us and left us. Now it’s just Rowan, Noah, Kingston, and me, playing a stimulating game of war veteran. Kingston and Rowan are quizzing us on war tactics in an attempt to prove their academy prepared them for any possible situation they’d suffer, but they underestimate the power of a curious mind. Before I started to enjoy loud music and booze, Noah and I would bond over reading things they were forced to read.

“We win!” Noah claps, giving me a high five, but we’ve won every single round, including the one where they went easy on us just to be gentlemen. “Can we do pack politics next?” She beams, “I live for that shit, my dad says I’m an encyclopedia on those things.”

“Scenario questions,” I second.

Rowan and Kingston share a look, neither one keen on playing anymore and yet neither one has the balls to say no to us. A silver lining shows when Danielle returns from her run, carrying a shopping bag from a nearby gas station. “Hey everyone.” She greets, her tone flat and heavy.

“Hi Dani,” Noah beams. “How was your run?”

“Great,” Danielle grins, already walking away. I know she doesn’t like Noah for some unknown reason, but she doesn’t avoid conversing with her like she is now. And my poor baby is trying so hard to get along with her because she’s often here to hang out with me. “I’ll just wash up.” She says, jogging up the stairs. She doesn’t make it halfway up when her plastic tears open and the contents clutter down the stairs.

Rowan moves quickly, “Danielle.” He says, his tone wary.

I stare down at the floor, now covered in cupcakes, frosting and water, alongside that, a little something unfamiliar that Rowan picks up with a shaky hand,

“Well, that wasn’t supposed to happen.” Danielle sighs, coming down the stairs.

I lean back so I’m closer to Noah, “What’s that?” I whisper,

“A pregnancy test,” Noah whispers. “Specifically for shifters.”

Oh. That makes sense, I’ve never seen that kind before, it is in the shape of a triangle with a stick end like the ones you put in Popsicles.

Rowan’s eyes slowly lift to Danielle’s, wide and curious. “It’s positive.”

“What?” Danielle gasps, snatching it from him. “No, that’s impossible,” she shakes her head, staring down at the test. “It said negative.”

Noah clears her throat, “Those tend to take longer than the human ones, especially that one,” she says, pointing to it. “The accurate reading takes ten minutes.”

Danielle turns pale, “Oh.”

Rowan slides a hand around her waist, “Are you okay?”

“Yeah,” she nods, her hand trembling. “Just a little shocked. That’s not exactly how I wanted to find out or tell you if it came out positive,” she says with a nervous laugh. “I had a whole thing planned, Audrey suggested this cute idea, and I was going to have…”

Rowan pulls her into his arms, making Noah and me fawn over them instantly. “This is enough, it’s perfectly chaotic. The baby is definitely taking after you after announcing himself to us like this.”

“Aww, you’re so cute, you guys.” Noah swoons, the excitement in her tone unbelievable for someone who doesn’t like kids one bit.

“Congratulations!” I tell them.

“Thank you,” Danielle laughs.

Kingston rises from his seat, “Congratulations Row.” He tells them, his eyes settling on Danielle with a teasing smile. “I wasn’t the one planning, huh?”

“I was,” she laughs, winking at him.

Rowan stares between them, they’re having a secret conversation none of us understands. Danielle’s smile falls and she gasps, putting a hand on her chest. “Oh my God, my wine!”

Rowan laughs, “Really, babe?”

“This is amazing, we should celebrate.” I smile, my heart warm on their behalf. “What do you say, Danielle? Up for a party?”
