King is still where I left him half an hour ago, and both he and Maddox pause when they see me. I stumble inside, launching myself into his arms. “Aeliana,” he rasps, instantly dropping to the floor with me, his eyes searching mine. “What’s going on?”

I open my mouth, but all that comes out is something nothing short of embarrassing, an actual squeak that sounds like I’m wheezing for air. It’s pathetic.

Maddox drops his file onto the table, staring at me. “I think she’s having a panic attack.”

“I..I…no, I don’t want them here,” I manage to say, the words strangled. “I don’t want him to-”

“Hey, it’s okay.” Kingston calmly says, holding me to his chest. “Breathe..breathe with me,” he cups my face in his hands. I try, I so hard, but I don’t remember how. Every time I try, I wind up choking air, tears blurring my eyes, but I keep blinking them away. I don’t understand how something so simple is taking me this much effort, I feel stupid, sick, and weak. I hate this, I hate my brain, I hate Seraphine, I hate her demon friend, and husband….

“Come on,” Kingston’s eyes widen. “Aeliana, focus.” He breathes, panic filling his eyes.

“He..I-No. No. No…” I shake my head, clawing at his shirt, pleading for him to fix this mess for me.

He nods, “Whatever you want baby, calm down first.” He gulps, “I’ve got you, okay?” I nod, trying to copy him. “ Now breathe, you’ve got it,” he urges, taking deep breaths, schooling me in breathing like a fish out of water. You can do it. You know how, you do this all the time.” He softly says, not losing his cool even when I choke on my own breath. He stays calm, guiding. “Come on, don’t hold it in, breathe out, now breathe in.” He coos, demonstrating with every word. “That’s it, good girl, again. Keep doing it.’

I keep at it until my body remembers how it should work, Kingston holds me through it while Maddox watches from afar, I don’t look at him, but I feel his concerned gaze.

“Are you okay now?” Kingston asks, his voice calm and controlled still. I nod against his chest, pulling back to wipe the snot and tears off my face.

Maddox offers me a handkerchief, staring at me like he’s assessing a patient. No. I look away. “That was very intense, Aeliana, how long have you-”

“I’m okay?” I say, my voice so unsure that it sounds like I’m asking for confirmation.

Kingston nods, “You’re okay.” He tells me, “Let’s have a seat.” He says, petting my head.

“What happened that got you this way?” Maddox asks, coming closer. Do not stamp a crazy label on me, do not stamp a crazy label on me. “That kind of panic attack is scary, you were fading right before our eyes.”

I suck in a breath, scared Maddox will fall into his doctor role. “Audrey.”

“What did she do?” Kingston demands, his voice rough like he’s ready to tear her apart already.

“She brought Sera and her husband to live with us.”

Kingston pauses, an eyebrow raised, “What?” Maddox asks. “I don’t understand, isn’t your sister married?”

I nod, “Their house burned down sometime today, and Audrey invited them here,” I swallow, that suffocating rage from earlier returning. “She didn’t ask me, she just brought Seraphine and that man into my space, she’s trying to…”

“Hey, breathe.” Maddox barks, his voice mildly panicked, “You’re getting worked up again.”

I nod, “Everyone was looking at me like I was crazy for not wanting them here, but they don’t know, they don’t know what they’ve done to me, they weren’t-”

“You didn’t ask them to come.” I suck in a breath, “She needs to get them to leave, but if they leave everyone will start talking bad about me again. They already are, people were watching, they think I’m being a bitter bitch for not wanting my sister here, they’ll just talk-
