Chapter 271

They both fall overly silent after that, the atmosphere is awkward. We sit in silence until Aeliana finds something that they can talk about. I learn her name through their chattering, and I find her quite smart. It’s a wonder how Alpha Grayson managed to land himself a young wife as smart as Luna Bridget, she doesn’t look old enough to be his children’s mother.

I spend most of my time working on my emails, and thank heavens for technology because I actually manage to get some work done. Alpha Grayson appears at the door a few moments later, with Calen and four other kids whom I recognise from his family pictures. They’re all older than Calen, except for one, he appears to be around his age.

The moment Calen sees us his face lights up, and Aeliana lifts off her seat, running towards the door. “Luna Aeliana!” Calen screams, meeting her halfway through the room and tackling her with a hug.

“Oh, my.” Luna Bridget gasps.

“My baby boy,” Aeliana squeals, her voice breaking from the excitement.

“Alpha Kingston,” Alpha Grayson greets me, walking past my wife and her favourite little boy. “Welcome.”

“Thank you,” I say, my tone unintentionally dismissive. This visit was never about us, it was about reuniting Aeliana and Calen.

She holds him close, squeezing him and kissing him all over his face. When she finally pulls back she’s smiling, staring at him with the very same wonder and shock as he does. “It’s you,” Calen stares.

Aeliana nods, “Oh, look at you.” She pouts, her lip quivering as if she might cry. I hope not, not in front of Alpha Grayson, who might sense her attachment to him and work me for it, and God help me because I would do anything to keep them together. “Wow, you’ve grown so much. Kingston, look at how tall he is,” she says, turning him to me with a proud smile.

The kid looks the same to me, but I smile anyway. “Hi buddy.”

“Alpha Kingston,” Calen beams, not as bright as he did seeing Aeliana, but I’ll take it. “Hey, you came too.”

“Don’t I get a hug?”

Aeliana lets go of him and nods, “Go on.” She tells him, but he doesn’t move, if anything, he moves closer to her.

“I missed you also.”

“I didn’t miss you,” I tease.

He huffs, arms crossed over his chest. “How mean.”

It’s then that I notice his arm happens to be bandaged, the same one that was in a cast back in Mooncrest, but I didn’t think much of it until I saw the white get stained write now and he winced. “What happened to your arm, Calen?”

He pauses, staring back at his cousins. “I shot it.”

“What?” Aeliana gasps, turning him back towards her.

Luna Bridget nervously laughs, “Well you see….um, Calen was excited for this trip, kept sneaking off and trying to get himself on the hunt. He accidentally shot himself.”

“Oh, let me see.” Aeliana’s smile falls, replaced with a deep concern as she inspects his arm. “Does it hurt?” She

asks, smoothing her thumb over the wound and wincing like she’s felt the pain.

“Nope, it grazed it.” Calen confidently says, “Thats what Uncle Grayson said.”

“He’s fine,” Alpha Grayson says. “Gave him a sweet and he forgot all about it.”

A sweet?

A child shoots himself in the arm, and they give him a sweet? Just like that? No hospital visits or anything. “I like hunting,” Calen beams. “I will catch a big deer for you.”

“Be careful,” Aeliana scolds, her voice sweet, but I can feel the pain behind it. “What did I tell you about asking adults for help?”

“I’m sorry,” Calen’s smile falls, “I won’t get shot again.”

“Good boy,” she smiles, petting his head.

“I had a dream,” he tells her.

“Yeah?” Her face lights up again. “Tell me all about it.”

“Luna, you’re sitting on the floor.” Alpha Grayson points out. “Why don’t you take a seat?”

“It’s fine,” she grins sweetly, pulling Calen into her lap. “Calen, why don’t you introduce me to your cousins?”

“We’re brothers,” the youngest one says. “Right. Calen?”

Calen nods, “Yes, Ryker. That’s Ryker, Luna Aeliana,” he says, pointing to him. He goes on to introduce the rest of them, and all of them greet Aeliana politely.

Alpha Grayson sits beside me, a little too close for comfort. “Bridget, bring some wine.”
