When Shawn finished getting ready and came out of the bathroom, he saw a blanket folded neatly on the couch. He couldn’t help but shake his head and let out a quiet laugh. Well, it was fine. He’d planned to sleep in the living room anyway.
After such a long day of traveling, topped off with all the drama that night, exhaustion hit hard. Neither of them lasted long before falling into a deep sleep.
The next morning, Shawn ate a quick breakfast, then rushed to work. Before leaving, he made sure Rebecca had food and left her a note. He told her she could go out exploring if she got bored, and she should use his credit card for anything she needed.
Rebecca sat downstairs at a café, squinting into the morning sun and soaking up the peace. For a moment, she let herself enjoy it all. Life like this actually seemed... pretty nice.
Still, she propped her chin on her hand. Only one of them was working now. Shawn must be under a lot of pressure. Maybe she should look for a job too. Her leg was better—walking was no problem anymore. Why not give it a shot?
Two uneventful days slipped by. Rebecca tried to find work, but it went nowhere. Without any ID or official documents, no one would hire her.
That evening, Shawn came home and found the apartment empty. A chill ran through him. He’d just gotten a call. He was flying to London the next day and had asked him to take care of Rebecca.
Panic rising, Shawn was about to rush out when the elevator doors opened. Rebecca stepped out, head down, looking defeated. Without thinking, Shawn grabbed her and pulled her into a tight hug.
“Where did you go? You scared the hell out of me,” he blurted, his voice thick with worry.
Rebecca blinked, surprised by how shaken he seemed. “I went to look for a job. But no one would hire me. They said I didn’t have documents and acted like I was some kind of illegal immigrant.”
She wrapped her arms around his neck, her voice small. “I’m useless.”
“You’re not,” Shawn said, rubbing her back and pressing his face to her shoulder. “You’re anything but useless.”
She was smart, driven, and kind in all the right ways. She stood up for herself and for what mattered. Whether it was in work or in life, Rebecca had always turned heads. She was meant to shine. If she ever got her memory back, she’d never settle for a life boxed in by four walls.
A heavy ache settled in Shawn’s chest. He squeezed her a little tighter, not sure if he was comforting her or himself.
“It’s okay,” he whispered. “Really. It’s okay.”
Even if she left, he told himself. He’d always been used to being alone. She had her own world to go back to. These days with her felt like a gift he was never meant to have. He shouldn’t hope for more.
Rebecca noticed the catch in his voice. She reached up and touched his cheek, gentle and concerned. “How come you’re home so early?”
Shawn tried to smile. “The fridge is empty. Let’s go get some groceries. And I’m off tomorrow, so I can take you out. Anywhere you want to go?”
Rebecca thought it over, her eyes brightening a little. “Can we go to the supermarket? I heard there’s a lot of great food.”
“Sure.”
