“Come on, we’re a couple. Who even says thank you like that? It just feels so distant.”

Shawn’s mind was spinning. He stared at Rebecca in disbelief, his heart racing. He wet his lips, trying to focus. “Wait… who told you that?”

“Everyone,” Rebecca replied, counting off on her fingers. “The nurse, the doctor, the driver, even the old man downstairs.” She looked at him, eyes wide, like he’d just asked the dumbest question in the world.

Shawn stood there, totally thrown. His chest felt weirdly tight and full, like a wave had just crashed inside him. No wonder she’d been acting so off. She’d misunderstood their relationship this whole time.

Part of him wanted to laugh, part of him just felt kind of bitter. After a long pause, he finally spoke. “Actually, you got it wrong. We—”

A loud knock at the door cut him off.

Rebecca scowled. “Who knocks like that so late? Some people have no manners.”

“I’ll check,” Shawn said, striding over and pulling open the door. Standing there was Katie, his landlord’s granddaughter.

Katie stared at him, embarrassment and anger fighting for control on her face. She’d just come home from work to find her grandpa announcing that Shawn had a girlfriend, and that the two of them had just gotten back from vacation. She thought about all those times she’d asked him out, asked if he was seeing anyone, and he’d always just said he was busy with work. Now, here he was, not just with a girlfriend, but apparently living together and going on trips.

So much for being “too busy.” He just wasn’t interested.

Rebecca’s voice floated out from inside. “Who is it?”

The sound of another woman made Katie’s eyes fill with tears. She couldn’t hold it in anymore.

Rebecca peered around, confused. She looked at Shawn, silently asking, Who is this? Why is she crying? Did you do something?

Shawn looked just as lost, his face saying, I have no clue.

Katie saw them exchange a look, like they totally got each other without even talking, and it made her feel even worse. She jabbed a finger at Shawn. “So, the reason you never went out with me is because you think I’m ugly? Is it the freckles? Do you think I look bad, just like everyone else?”

Rebecca took a closer look at Katie under the dim hallway light. Sure, she had freckles all over, but she wasn’t ugly. If anything, it made her stand out in a cute way. Rebecca sighed to herself. Some women get so caught up in chasing love that they forget what makes them special.

She was about to tell Katie her freckles were adorable, but Katie cut her off, stomping her foot in frustration. “You just want girls like her, cute but empty inside. I thought you were different, but you’re just like every other guys.”

That last comment was obviously aimed at Rebecca.
