They pulled up to the apartment building in no time. As soon as they walked through the lobby doors, they ran right into Katie. Her eyes flickered with curiosity as she glanced between Rebecca and Stephen, but when she noticed their hands linked together, her jaw practically dropped. She looked completely stunned, like she’d just seen something unbelievable. Even as Rebecca and Stephen stepped into the elevator, Katie was still standing there, frozen.
Stephen cocked an eyebrow. “She knows you?”
Rebecca hesitated, holding the elevator door open. “Kind of. Wait here, I need to talk to her for a second.”
Stephen leaned back against the elevator wall, one hand in his pocket, watching as Rebecca jogged over to Katie. He could see their lips moving. Katie’s eyes, which had looked so suspicious and intense, suddenly softened, even taking on a shy sparkle.
Rebecca rushed back, a little out of breath, sweat dotting her nose.
“What did you say to her?” Stephen asked, pulling out a handkerchief and gently wiping her nose.
Rebecca grinned. “That’s a secret. I’m not telling you.”
Stephen laughed quietly, but he had a feeling it was something about Shawn. Either way, he owed Shawn. If it hadn’t been for him, he might never have found Rebecca again.
Still, the thought of Rebecca living with Shawn for all that time, spending every day together, left a sour taste in his mouth. Officially, he and Rebecca were together now, but they’d barely had a handful of real dates. First Joan came back and stirred up trouble, then Rebecca got kidnapped by Bruce, and after that, she disappeared into the sea and Shawn found her. They’d faced more drama than characters in a video game. Meanwhile, all the moments Stephen should have shared with her had gone to Shawn instead.
The more he thought about it, the more frustrated he felt. He tugged at his collar, taking a long breath.
The elevator reached the sixteenth floor. Rebecca walked toward the apartment, her steps growing heavier with each one. She used to think this place could be home. Now she realized she’d only ever been a guest.
She knocked twice. After a moment, the door opened slowly from the inside.
Seeing Shawn again made Rebecca pause, awkwardness flickering across her face. She remembered those days she’d mistaken him for her boyfriend and couldn’t quite meet his eyes. “I’m here to pack up my things,” she said quietly.
Shawn stepped aside. “Yeah, I know.”
Rebecca headed straight for the bedroom. She didn’t have much, just some clothes and a few toiletries. The bedroom was too small for Stephen to follow, so he stayed in the living room, watching her tidy up. He glanced at the sofa and spotted a blanket folded on top. It had to be Shawn’s. That eased his mind a little. At least Shawn had kept some boundaries.
Shawn came out of the kitchen, setting two glasses of water on the table. Noticing Stephen’s gaze on the blanket, he cleared his throat, his eyes darting away. “Relax, nothing happened between us.”
Stephen walked over and patted him on the shoulder. “Thanks. If you need anything, just call me.”
An awkward silence filled the room. Both men stood there, preoccupied, their eyes drifting to the girl in the bedroom.

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
