Megan squinted. “Mr. Lamont and Rebecca used to date.”
“What?!” Everyone sucked in a breath at once.
Someone blurted out, “So if Mr. Lamont is with Sonja now, doesn’t that mean…”
He cheated.
Megan let out a cold laugh. “That’s not even the whole story. Rebecca gave up her studies to help Bruce start the company. For five years, she worked nonstop to help him get the business off the ground. Bruce promised her the Vice President position, but as soon as he could, he handed that job to Sonja instead.”
“All because Sonja is his old crush.”
“And get this. This month was supposed to be Bruce and Rebecca’s engagement. But you all know what happened. Rebecca quit, and now Sonja is glued to his side.”
The room went quiet. For a moment, no one said a word.
Then, like a wave, the anger broke out.
“Seriously, I haven’t seen a player like that in ages!”
“That trashy couple deserves each other. Hope they stick together forever!”
“No, I have to let everyone know what these two did. Let’s see her act like some high-class intellectual after this!”
After that night, Sonja’s reputation at NovaStack Cloud fell straight to the bottom.
While everyone was talking, Sonja was at home, on a call with Shawn, who was all the way across the world.
Shawn’s lazy laugh drifted through the phone as he took a long drag from his cigarette. “What makes you so sure I’ll agree to your conditions?”
Sonja smiled, twirling a strand of hair around her finger. “If I’m not mistaken, you have a little sister in Cloudville. Her name’s Lola, isn’t it?”
Shawn went silent for a second. His breath caught.
“Looks like my information is right,” Sonja said, her lips curling up.
“What are you trying to do?” Shawn’s voice turned icy, a clear sign he was about to lose his temper.
“Relax. As long as you cooperate, nothing will happen to you or your sister.”
Sitting at the table, Samantha glanced at Rebecca’s tired eyes. “You’re staying up later and later. You need to take care of yourself.”
Rebecca nodded. “The exam is in less than two weeks. After that, I’m going to sleep forever.”
“Don’t overdo it. It’s okay if you don’t pass.”
Rebecca smiled. “Don’t worry about me, Mom. I’ve got this.”
They were chatting when the doorbell rang.
Samantha got up to answer it. “Lottie, what brings you here? Have you had dinner yet?”
Lottie didn’t answer. She marched in, looking furious, and threw her bag onto the sofa.
“Rebecca, you are so shameless!”
Samantha, who was serving rice in the kitchen, nearly dropped the bowl. She rushed out, frowning. “Lottie, how can you talk to her like that?”
What on earth had happened to the Bernan family? Lottie had changed so much since she’d gone back to them. Samantha used to think Lottie was just young, but now she was hearing her acting so rude to her own sister. It was almost too much for Samantha to take in.

The ending seems abrupt. Is it like a cliffhanger? I was expecting more. A lot of questions are unanswered....
Why is the story tagged as complete when I think the chapters are incomplete and it hasn’t ended yet?...
