Sebastian's disdain for Raelynn was an open secret within the family.
He was relentlessly cold to her.
How on earth did he expect Raelynn to willingly give him a child with an attitude like that?
If he just spent a few seconds coaxing her, wouldn't Raelynn throw herself at his feet again?
Instead, Sebastian completely ignored Raelynn, looking at his grandmother. "Have you taken your blood pressure medication yet?"
Matilda knew he was deflecting.
She waved him off in defeat. There was no point in arguing with him!
Raelynn saw Sebastian's total apathy loud and clear. He truly looked as if none of this concerned him. The two exchanged zero words, the emotional chasm between them suddenly widening further than ever before.
Even upon hearing that his wife had suffered a miscarriage, he hadn't shown a shred of initiative to comfort or pity her.
Raelynn couldn't care less about his lack of affection anymore. Her only concern was that her lie had held up and the crisis of Lily's existence remained buried.
Matilda, leaving absolutely no room for argument, forced them to stay the night. She shooed them upstairs to their old bedroom, citing that it was a "beautiful evening to reconnect."
Matilda practically escorted them to the door. As Raelynn stepped inside, she heard the older woman whisper harshly to Sebastian behind her back.
"She's in a highly vulnerable and emotional state right now. Be gentle and intimate with her tonight. Who knows, things might just go smoothly..."
The bedroom door clicked shut.
The heavy silence was broken only by the sound of their steady breathing.
The room was incredibly familiar. For years, this was where they spent whatever time they had together.
Raelynn walked over to the armchair and sat down, fully intending to just wait out the clock until she could leave.
But by pure chance.
The chair she chose faced the window seat where Sebastian had settled.
Suddenly, Raelynn met his cold, shadowy gaze.
He was staring at her.
She couldn't decipher the look in his eyes.
Raelynn figured that no matter how much Sebastian despised her, he would eventually put on a half-assed performance and ask a question or two.
This was exactly why she was so fiercely determined to keep Lily hidden.
She was never going to give him the chance to be her daughter's father.
This was the one, solitary thing she had total, autonomous control over in the suffocating grip of the Croix family.
Sebastian remembered that day.
And he remembered exactly what he had said.
He also remembered the way Raelynn had looked when she stood before him after flying halfway across the globe—her bright, radiant face, those deep, sweet dimples.
As it turned out.
She had endured over ten hours of a grueling flight just to bring him the "happiest news."
He stared at her now, watching as she recounted the story with the cold detachment of a stranger. His features seemed to completely dissolve into the endless darkness of the night behind him.
After a long, agonizing silence, Sebastian finally spoke.
"Then it's for the best."
