Even a divorce had to be handled this way.
She couldn't take this anymore!
Raelynn forcibly suppressed the world-destroying emotions and said hoarsely, "Okay, I'll deal with it."
She dragged her heavy legs outside. Taking out her phone, her movements shaking uncontrollably from the sheer fury gripping her heart, her face remained expressionless as she went to dial Sebastian's number.
But the call didn't go through.
Another call came in first. No caller ID.
Raelynn answered it anyway.
Matilda Croix's voice came through. "Raelynn, the Croix family is hosting a gala tonight. You should be free, so come over. Attend as the Professor of Exceptional Merit of Kingsford University."
Listening to that voice, Raelynn didn't speak. She didn't even break down hysterically to demand why she hadn't been given a real divorce certificate. It was pointless now.
She felt nauseous.
Matilda was still speaking. "Grandma won't blame you for having the Hudson family host your celebration banquet. But many socialites are coming to the gala. You can meet contacts and win glory for the Croix family. It kills multiple birds with one stone. 7 PM, don't be late."
She felt like a doll placed in a display window, meant for people to admire and squeeze every drop of value from.
Raelynn tilted her head up, looking at the blinding sky. Her hand gripping the phone trembled, but her voice was eerily calm. "Alright."
The Matriarch was satisfied with her obedience. She knew Raelynn had just been temporarily confused before.
After ending the call, Raelynn got back into her car. There was still a ringing in her ears, but she felt she had never been as calm as she was right now.
She didn't want to ask 'why' anymore. She didn't want to compromise and 'beg' them to let her go either.
Since both were present, Matilda spotted them from a distance. She excused herself from the guests and walked over, specifically heading to Sebastian's side, urging him to walk over to Raelynn with her.
"You two link arms and walk in together in a moment."
Sebastian probably wasn't really listening to the old woman. He looked down at a message on his phone. His silent response—Raelynn actually understood what he meant. It was a rejection.
Coincidentally, from her angle, she managed to catch the key information on his phone screen. Seraphina was texting him, saying she was waiting for him outside.
Seraphina had come too, but hadn't entered.
Seeing Sebastian ignore her, the Matriarch instantly grew displeased. "For the public's sake today, just pay attention. Raelynn is here, look at her a bit more."
Saying this, the old lady seemed to have completely forgotten the incident at the restaurant, where Raelynn had talked back to her and Dr. Evelyn Hayes had backed Raelynn up.
She spoke to Raelynn affectionately again. "Don't worry, Grandma didn't let Seraphina come this time. The main focus today is you and Sebastian."
