Chloe's face darkened instantly.
She was about to tear Seraphina apart, but a quick glance at Raelynn made her swallow the insult. She was terrified of pushing Raelynn over the edge.
But Raelynn didn't explode.
Because Seraphina wasn't just running her mouth; she had the cold, hard facts to back it up.
What could Raelynn even say?
Agree? Argue? Deny it? Start swearing?
Any reaction would just make her look pathetic.
Raelynn just grabbed Chloe and walked out.
Leo sauntered over to Seraphina. "Let's hope Raelynn finally gets the message. Sitting in a chair that belongs to someone else only tortures everyone involved."
Seraphina raised a perfectly sculpted eyebrow.
As far as she was concerned.
If Raelynn had even a shred of self-respect, she would sign the divorce papers and crawl away quietly. Walking away would be the only decent thing she could do.
Standing in the way of true love was practically a sin.
-
Chloe was absolutely fuming as they left the event.
She could feel how utterly trapped and powerless Raelynn was.
If Raelynn's husband had been anyone other than the untouchable Sebastian Croix, she could have burned the whole place to the ground.
But reality was brutally cruel.
Raelynn had to think about the long game. Throwing a tantrum would cost her everything.
"The way that home-wrecker was smirking! I think I'm actually having a heart attack." Seraphina's parting comment had Chloe practically steaming from the ears.
If murder wasn't a felony, she would have happily backed a truck over the woman.
"I swear, I wish I'd gone to law school. If I were in charge, I'd rewrite the entire justice system. I'd add a clause: anyone who knowingly sleeps with a married person gets thrown straight into a cell! Without any real consequences, these trashy people just think they can get away with anything!"
The whole ordeal had left Raelynn utterly exhausted.
Still, she managed a weak thumbs-up. "I fully support your run for Mayor of Kingsford. You can hand out matching jumpsuits to all of them."
Chloe pouted. "How are you still making jokes?"
Raelynn tilted her head back, looking up at the sky.
"Life is too long. If I spend every second dwelling on the pain, I'm just punishing myself. If I can't figure something out, I'm just going to let it go."
Chloe opened her mouth to argue.
"Can I help you?"
He hadn't stayed here last night. He knew she was in the room. And she highly doubted he had suddenly grown a conscience and come to apologize for humiliating her in front of Seraphina.
He had been blatant enough not to even bother giving her an excuse anymore.
He clearly didn't give a damn what she thought.
Sebastian casually tossed his jacket over the back of the sofa. "I'm sleeping here tonight."
Raelynn's expression tightened. "Why?"
"Raelynn, we are married." Sebastian caught her look of shock and tossed the reminder over his shoulder as he turned to pour himself a glass of water.
He didn't need a reason to stay in his own room.
The words felt utterly disjointed and absurd to Raelynn.
Married?
So he actually remembered that?
Did he remember they were still legally married when he was practically making out with Seraphina in front of half the city?
Men were really something else. Their rules were so insanely arrogant, the double standards were almost laughable.
