Raelynn had just poured Arthur a glass of water when someone knocked on the door.
Confused, she walked over. "You got the food that fast?"
But as she pulled the door open, her expression froze. The faint smile on her face vanished instantly.
Sebastian lowered his gaze, his dark eyes locking onto her face. "Aren't you going to invite me in?"
His voice was completely flat, devoid of emotion.
Raelynn's first instinct was to slam the door in his face, but from inside the room, Arthur called out, "Sunny, who is it?"
Her knuckles turned white on the door handle before she finally let go. She looked at Sebastian. He hadn't come empty-handed; he was holding several exquisitely wrapped gift bags.
Sebastian gave her a brief glance, then brushed past her and walked straight inside.
"Grandpa, it's me."
Approaching Arthur, a rare, genuine warmth entered Sebastian's eyes.
Arthur looked confused for a moment, but after staring at him, his face lit up. "Sebastian? Are you finished with work?"
Raelynn walked in just in time to see her grandfather's beaming face. She pressed her lips together and stayed quiet.
Sebastian offered a slight smile. "Your birthday is a priority for me. Work can wait."
Raelynn cast a sideways glance at him. She had to admit one thing: when Sebastian Croix actually wanted to make someone happy, nobody could resist his charm.
"This is from your favorite bakery, but it's sugar-free. We need you staying healthy," Sebastian said, placing one of the elegant boxes on the table.
"Good, good. Whatever you say." Arthur nodded affectionately, in wonderfully high spirits.
"And I also brought this. I know you've been missing Grandma's artwork, so I tracked down a few of her pieces for you. Would you like to see?"
Sebastian opened another long box.
Raelynn looked over, genuinely caught off guard.
Most of her grandmother's calligraphy and paintings had been sold off to various antique shops years ago. Even Raelynn had struggled to track them down.
Yet here was Sebastian, pulling out five pristine scrolls.
