Fury Unleashed: The Awakening Alpha Nira novel Chapter 9

Nira's POV:

As I looked up, I saw a man not far ahead in a tailored white suit. He stood tall, his face sharply defined, handsome in the way that only a top-tier Alpha could be.

But the moment Lyra, my wolf, caught his scent, she felt nothing but revulsion.

Based on the intel I had on the Howell family, this had to be Colt Howell, the adopted son of the family.

It was said that Luna Mary adored him, treating him as if he were her own flesh and blood.

Colt looked at Janice with a faint smile. "Janice, you're here."

She walked up to him quickly, and the two started talking like they had known each other for years. Watching Janice act like that, it became painfully clear what she was after.

Luna Mary only had one biological son, Kade. But Colt, even as an adopted son, was officially recognized as the second heir to the Alpha King.

Kade, the first heir, had always assisted the Alpha King in overseeing all the packs in Northreach.

Since his illness, some in the Howell family had pushed to hand over those responsibilities to Colt.

If Kade didn't survive, Colt could very well become the only remaining successor.

The Sorens probably believed that if Janice became Colt's bonded mate, she'd eventually rise to become the most powerful Luna in the alliance.

So they used every chance they had to send her here. I let out a quiet scoff.

The Sorens really were playing the long game...

Soon after, I followed my mother, Jenna, into the banquet hall, led by Reese.

Inside, the guests wore elegant formalwear. The room buzzed with light conversation, clinking glasses, and polite laughter.

Jenna moved through the crowd effortlessly, chatting with Lunas from various packs, never once bothering to introduce me.

When people noticed I didn't have an external wolf form, their eyes swept over me with disdain. No one asked. They all pretended I wasn't even there.

Lyra burned with fury inside me. "None of their wolves are stronger than me, and they still dare to look down on us!"

I smiled and corrected her quietly, "They're judging me, not you. You're hidden inside me, and your rank is way higher than theirs. They simply can't sense you."

Once Lyra calmed down, I stopped trying to play polite. I was already thinking about how to slip away. I had to see Kade for myself before I made my next move.

While Jenna was distracted, I slowed down and broke away from the group, heading in the opposite direction.

It became clear that his condition was deeply connected to his wolf being dormant. The more I examined him, the heavier my heart felt. His illness wasn't normal. It was far more complicated.

I had originally come here tonight to find a way to break our bond agreement.

I returned to take revenge on the Sorens. The last thing I needed was for them to gain more power through an alliance with the Howells.

At the same time, I had been weighing the possibility of working with Kade.

But his strange illness, combined with the political chaos in the Howell family, meant that getting involved could bring nothing but trouble.

Still, looking at Kade's face as he lay there unconscious, my hand unconsciously reached out and brushed between his brows.

I hesitated. I couldn't bring myself to let someone this powerful, this capable, just die like this.

My adoptive father had once told me that my blood held healing properties. I had never tested it, but maybe now was the time.

Without another thought, I raised my hand and bit into my finger, then leaned down, lips brushing his.

I pried open his mouth and passed the blood into him. Just as I was about to pull away, Kade opened his eyes.
