Helena pulled up at the closest hospital, right as Harrisburg’s best doctors started pouring in. The place was buzzing. Every doctor in the building seemed to find an excuse to wander by, hoping to catch a glimpse or pick up something from the visiting experts.
No one expected the big emergency to be just a fractured arm and a mild concussion. It was the kind of thing the hospital could have handled on their own. No one could figure out why the city’s top medical minds were needed for this.
Theresia lay on the hospital bed. Garry and Warren had left to see the specialists out, so now it was just her and Helena in the room.
Helena had held back her questions with Garry around, but now she was free to ask whatever she wanted.
She crossed her legs in the visitor’s chair and looked straight at Theresia, ready to get to the bottom of things. “So let me get this straight. He called every top doctor in Harrisburg just to treat your arm and a little bump on the head? If I hadn’t seen it myself, I’d never believe it.”
Theresia couldn’t believe it either.
Helena scooted her chair closer, eyes narrowed. “When did you even meet this guy? Spill it.”
They were always honest with each other, but for some reason, Theresia felt a little guilty under Helena’s stare.
She looked away and kept her answer short. “I met him right after I got back. He’s got a problem with Lawrence, so technically, we’re sort of partners.”
Helena gave her a look. “Do you think I’m stupid? No ‘partner’ would pull strings like that just for you. And the way he was acting, it’s obvious there’s something else going on.”
Theresia frowned, wanting to push back, but she couldn’t think of a good reason. Still, she didn’t believe Garry had feelings for her.
He was way too proud for something like a secret crush. If he liked someone, he’d probably just go after them, no hesitation.
“We’re not like that,” Theresia said. “There’s nothing between us. No romantic drama.”
Moving too fast made her arm throb and her head spin, but as soon as she got her balance, she headed for the door.
Helena had no choice but to follow her.
They were just about to get in the elevator when Garry and Warren stepped out.
Garry’s eyes found her right away. “Where are you going?” His voice was low and serious.
He had saved her, so Theresia felt she owed him at least a quick explanation. “I need to see Dave. We have something to discuss. And… Garry, thank you for saving me.”
In that moment, when everything was falling apart, he’d done exactly what needed to be done. No hesitation, no second-guessing, just action that kept her safe.
