Theresia grabbed Helena's arm, stopping her. “Where do you think you’re going?”
Seeing Theresia made Helena calm down a little, but she was still fuming. “Jared actually used me to mess with you. I swear, I’m going to tear him apart.”
Helena was sharp. She’d heard from the staff that it was Theresia who called for the car, so she’d already figured out the whole situation. The more she thought about it, the angrier she got. She could have taken Jared out herself.
“Relax. You won’t get the chance,” Theresia said, taking the kitchen knife from Helena and handing it to a maid nearby.
“What do you mean?” Helena asked, confused.
Theresia sat down, looking completely unbothered. “Jared’s locked up right now. He hasn’t even been released yet. Unless you’re planning to break into jail, there’s nothing you can do.”
That actually got Helena’s attention. She walked over and leaned in, her face full of curiosity. “Wait, really? Tell me everything. I could use a good story right now.”
After Theresia quickly filled her in, Helena stared at her with wide eyes. “Theresia, sometimes I honestly admire you. Where do you get these wild ideas?”
Theresia shot her a look. “Is that supposed to be a compliment?”
Helena grinned. “Of course. With my limited vocabulary, that’s probably the best I can do.”
Her goofy blinking finally made Theresia laugh.
Getting back to the point, Theresia said, “Helena, I need some medicine for treating wounds.”
Helena immediately got worried. She grabbed Theresia and started checking her over. “Are you hurt? Where? Let me see.”
“It’s not for me,” Theresia explained. “It’s for a friend.”
Helena’s eyes narrowed. “A friend? As in, a guy?”
Theresia sat down and went straight to the point. “So, what did you find?”
Carl looked right at her. “Remember what I told you last time? All the doctors and nurses who worked on your surgery are gone now. Not just from the hospital, but from Harrisburg altogether. The lead surgeon died in a car accident two years ago. The assistant doctor was killed in a fight with a patient’s family. The nurse who helped out nearly drowned last year and now has brain damage. She doesn’t even recognize her own family anymore.”
Theresia remembered, and she definitely didn’t think it was just bad luck.
She nodded. “Yeah, I remember.”
Carl wrapped his hands around his coffee cup. “I’ve been volunteering at the nursing home where she’s staying. Honestly, I think she’s faking it.”
Theresia’s hand tightened, excitement flashing in her eyes. “Are you serious?”
Carl nodded. “I’m almost sure of it. She probably knows it’s her only shot at staying alive.”
