The woman’s words were cutting, her eyes sweeping over Naomi with barely disguised contempt. She pushed past her and strode into the apartment like she owned the place.
Naomi went pale, lowering her head until her chin nearly touched her chest. Her voice trembled. “You’re here to see Theresia, right?”
The woman didn’t even look her way. The sharp tap of her heels echoed through the entryway as she walked straight into the living room. “Go get Theresia.”
Before Naomi could move, Theresia’s voice rang out from the hallway. “Sandra. What do you want?”
Theresia stepped out of her bedroom and saw Sandra standing there, all haughty and self-important, just like three years ago. Some people never change.
Sandra turned at the sound, surprise flickering in her eyes before she covered it up with that same old disdain. “Theresia, I came here because I need a favor.”
She reached into her Hermes bag and pulled out a document, walking right up to Theresia. “This is a settlement agreement. I need your signature.”
Theresia took the papers and barely glanced at them. Of course, this was about her son, Jared. Sandra must have rushed over first thing in the morning to plead for him.
Without hesitation, Theresia ripped the agreement in half, her eyes cold as she mimicked Sandra’s sneer. “Why would I forgive a man who tried to rape me?”
She flicked the torn pieces into the air. White fragments drifted to the floor.
She tried to move closer, but Theresia immediately stepped back. “Sandra, just say what you need to say. Don’t get so close. We’re not friends.”
Sandra’s smile faltered, the expression twisted and awkward on her face.
“Theresia, I know you never got over Jared breaking off your engagement three years ago. How about this? If you sign the papers, I’ll have him divorce Patti as soon as he’s out, and then he can marry you. You both still have feelings for each other. I’d just be helping you.”
Theresia stared at her, lips curling into a cool, almost mocking smile. Sandra really had been rich and arrogant for so long that she’d forgotten how to even pretend to be humble.
Just as Theresia was about to say something, Naomi rushed over and put herself between them. “Get out!” she shouted. “Just leave! Who would want to marry your son? Any man who forces himself on a woman belongs in prison. Theresia doesn’t want him and she never will.”
