So, he was really planning to stay with her?
Teresa honestly had no idea what Garry was thinking anymore. He felt more like a mystery with every passing minute.
At the same time, Parrish found himself wondering about them. Yesterday, when they’d met, they’d acted like strangers. But today, the way they behaved, it was like they’d known each other forever.
Parrish gave Teresa a look that said he’d definitely noticed.
“There’s no need,” Teresa said. “It’s just a cold. Nothing serious.”
Garry crossed his legs and toyed with the red string on his wrist, not even looking at her. “Teresa, I wasn’t asking for your opinion.”
He didn’t have to shout. The message was clear. What she thought didn’t matter to him at all.
He was so commanding, so matter-of-fact. Even though his words were calm, she could feel the pressure. It was like the air in the room got heavier.
Teresa frowned. She wasn’t even trying to hide her annoyance anymore.
Right then, Parrish reached out and gently tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. Teresa froze, her eyes locked on his face.
Parrish leaned back, giving her a soft smile. “Your hair was a little messy. I just wanted to help.”
He looked so gentle, but Teresa could tell he was up to something. Was he trying to get under Garry’s skin?
Parrish glanced over at Garry, his tone casual. “I was with Teresa for her checkup. She’s fine. I appreciate your concern, but she’s still not feeling great. She needs rest, not more excitement.”
Garry’s eyes turned ice-cold, sharp with anger. “You’ll accept on her behalf?”
He looked at Teresa, waiting for her to say something. But she stayed quiet.
Teresa gave him a small smile. “It’s fine. Go ahead.”
Before leaving, Parrish let his eyes linger on Garry for a second longer, then walked away without another word.
As soon as Parrish was out of sight, Teresa looked at Garry, unable to hold back. “You really know how to pull strings, Garry. In Harrisburg, you’re the big boss, and here in Veridian, you do whatever you want.”
Garry didn’t bother pretending. “He was just in the way,” he said, completely straight-faced.
He’d wanted to let Teresa be happy with Parrish, but sometimes logic and feelings just didn’t mix. Watching them together, he’d felt something dark and furious bubble up inside him.
He would never hurt Parrish, but as long as he was there, he could at least keep Parrish out of the picture.
Suddenly, Teresa stared right at him, her eyes searching his. “Garry, do you like me?”
