Theresia watched her, a sly smile tugging at her lips, her eyes filled with casual mockery. “Yeah, it’s me. What, are you disappointed?”
During all three years of her marriage to Lawrence, Theresia had barely left Verdant Heights. He never took her out to meet his friends or showed her off at parties. The Baker family was even worse. Ever since Patti came back, they only recognized her as their daughter and acted like Theresia didn’t exist. Hardly anyone knew what Theresia even looked like.
But now, everyone knew Lawrence had spent the last three months searching the world for his missing wife... and that wife’s name was Theresia. Wait, could Theresia be the ex-wife who dumped Lawrence? No wonder she’d shown up to ruin everything for Patti. It was payback. Revenge for being the other woman.
People in the crowd started to lose their patience.
“I almost forgot you’re a homewrecker,” someone snapped at Patti. “How do you still have the nerve to hold an art show?”
“Not just a mistress, but a cheater who uses ghostwriters. That’s disgusting.”
“How does someone like her even belong in the art world?”
Patti’s affair was dragged out for everyone to see, and she shook with anger, fists clenched so tight her knuckles whitened. She glared at Theresia, wishing she could burn her to ashes with just a look. “Theresia, I should have known it was you. I should have seen this coming.”
It made sense—she’d been humiliated by Moses on her birthday, embarrassed at the Vermilion Gallery, and now her secrets were exposed at her own art show. Who else hated her enough to go this far?
Theresia’s smile stayed, but her eyes were ice cold. “You should’ve realized it sooner. But you just can’t admit that you’re not as good as me. The truth is, you didn’t want to believe Teresa could be me.”
“I want you to know I can take everything from you without even trying. Everything you worked so hard for means nothing to me. You’ll always be the one I step over.” Her eyes narrowed, her tone sharp. “Remember those words? That’s what you said to me. I’m just giving them back.”
Stunned, Patti stared at her, eyes wide with rage. “Theresia, I won’t let you get away with this!”
Theresia’s smile vanished. She grabbed Patti’s collar, pulling her close. “Patti, you’ve been looking through my eyes for three years. How does it feel?”
Patti’s expression flickered with panic. For the first time, she was actually scared of Theresia.
They were so close they could feel each other’s breath. Theresia’s voice dropped. “You know you’re going to have to pay for everything you’ve done. This is just the beginning, Patti.”
She shoved Patti aside, and Patti stumbled, struggling to keep her balance.
