Theresia looked like she’d rather be anywhere else, especially with Jared standing right in front of her. Still, Jared didn’t take offense. He knew he’d messed up in the past, and if Theresia wanted to treat him coldly, he figured he had it coming.
He didn’t try to argue. “Theresia, I’m not giving up. I came here just to see you. Honestly, I’m grateful you’re even talking to me. I’m going to win you back, and I’ll show you how serious I am about it.”
Since when did Jared have this persistent side? Theresia could only sigh. She needed to find Helena and figure out what was really going on tonight. She searched around, but Helena was nowhere to be found. Instead, she spotted Hanson.
Without hesitation, she grabbed his arm. “Hanson, you’re the one who put this welcome party together for Helena, right? So why is it that anyone can just waltz in?”
Hanson gave an embarrassed smile. He explained that Helena wanted to invite all the promising young men in Harrisburg, and since Hanson knew a lot of people, he’d printed a ton of invitations. He figured if he cast a wide enough net, Theresia would have plenty of options. What he didn’t plan for was some people selling their invites for a quick buck.
So now, all kinds of random people had shown up, and Hanson had only just found out. He knew he should have been more careful.
“Theresia, I’ll tell you the truth, but you have to promise not to get mad.”
She raised an eyebrow, signaling him to go on.
When Hanson finished explaining, Theresia went quiet. Honestly, he would have preferred if she yelled at him. Her silence just made him more nervous.
After a long pause, Theresia finally spoke. “Do I look like someone who just likes to suffer? Or am I really so pathetic that I’ll never get over what Lawrence did to me?”
Hanson shook his head. “You’re right. I’ll admit it, we just care about you too much and got carried away.”
“What did you say? Theresia’s real father is him? Are you sure you didn’t mess this up?”
“Okay, keep this to yourself. Not a word to anyone. I’ll give you another two hundred grand.”
Theresia’s heart jumped. Her biological father? Patti had found out who he was? Was she planning to use that against her?
Just then, the toilet flushed. Theresia hurried out of the bathroom, only to walk straight into someone’s chest.
The man looked down at her, but before he could say anything, Theresia quickly covered his mouth with her hand. With her other arm, she pulled him close and spun them both around, using him as a shield to block Patti’s view as she walked out.
