The news snapped Hanson out of his buzz. He stared at Theresia in disbelief. “Wait, Patti figured it out already? I haven’t even found a lead, and she’s got it handled?”
Theresia was just as puzzled. Hanson had spent years in the messy world of law, and his connections ran deep. How had Patti gotten ahead of him?
She frowned and took a slow sip of her wine, feeling a weight settle in her chest. Hanson noticed and tried to comfort her. “Hey, don’t stress. I’ll think of something else. I won’t give up.”
She nodded, clinking her glass with his.
At the hospital, Lawrence was lying in bed, his head wrapped in thick bandages. His face was clouded with anger. Patti had stayed close, but everything she did seemed to only annoy him more. He looked like he wanted her gone.
Still, Patti wasn’t about to give up. Lawrence was her last hope and she wasn’t letting go.
She poured a glass of warm water and handed it to him carefully. “Lawrence, here, have some water.”
He shot her a cold glance, his brows drawn tight. “I told you to leave. Did you not hear me?”
Of course she heard. She wasn’t deaf. Patti forced herself to smile, remembering how much he used to like her smile. She’d even worn the vintage dress he always admired, the one that hugged her curves perfectly. The high slit showed off her long, pale legs, just the way he liked.
“I know you don’t want to see me right now, but you need someone to look after you. As soon as you’re better, I’ll go, I promise. I won’t… get in your way.”
She froze, not sure why he was asking. “Yeah. Jared never really loved me. Now that Theresia’s back, he’s done with me for good.”
Lawrence’s eyes turned icy as he looked at her. “Don’t worry. I won’t let him divorce you. I’ll help you keep your place. You’ll always be Jared’s wife.”
No, that wasn’t what she wanted.
Patti rushed to explain. “Lawrence, I was wrong. Three years ago, I thought Jared was the one, but now I realize… the person I truly love has been here all along. I had the best kind of love, and I was just too stupid to see it until now.”
