Patti didn’t care about her pride anymore. She threw herself into Lawrence’s arms, her voice trembling. “Lawrence, I love you. I was so blind before. I made a mistake. I want to come back. Please, just give me another chance.”
Lawrence stood there, not moving an inch. His voice was cold enough to send a chill down her spine. “Patti, I don’t love you anymore.”
Maybe the truth was, he never really did.
It had only hit him recently. Growing up side by side with Patti, he’d gotten used to looking out for her. Whatever she wanted, he did his best to make it happen. When she wanted Jared, he helped her become Jared’s wife.
But if it had been Theresia, Lawrence knew he could never let her go. The idea of Theresia marrying Jared, sharing a bed with him night after night, raising his children… it was too much to bear. Even thinking about it made his heart ache. Whether in this life or the next, he would never let Theresia slip away.
Patti froze. She couldn’t believe what she’d just heard. Her hands slowly dropped as she stared at Lawrence, her eyes wide in disbelief.
Lawrence’s face showed nothing. “Patti, focus on being a good wife to Jared. Anything else… just forget it.”
…
After Theresia put Lawrence in the hospital, Hanson was already making plans to bail her out if she got arrested. But Lawrence didn’t do anything. Hanson’s worry turned out to be for nothing.
To be honest, even Theresia was surprised. Lawrence was known for never letting things go, for always getting back at people, but this time, nothing happened.
Her mood instantly soured. She frowned. “Jared, if you’re going to have a meltdown, do it somewhere else. Don’t ruin my mood.”
She went to open her car door, but Jared slammed it shut and blocked her way. “Theresia, do you remember our first date? I gave you a bouquet just like this one. I’ll never forget how cute you looked. That smile of yours… it healed me in ways you’ll never know.”
She remembered that day too. Jared had still been a little awkward back then, blushing as he handed her the flowers. For a while, she really thought they’d make it to the end together. But he couldn’t resist temptation, and their paths split.
Sure, there was some nostalgia. But after everything she’d been through, those old feelings were long gone.
“Take your flowers and leave.”
