Catherine timidly tugged at Vincent's sleeve, keeping her voice low. "Honey... Scarlett is Yardley's ex-wife. They just got divorced. How did she earn the trust of your big boss? What is going on?"
The realization finally clicked for Vincent. He impatiently brushed off his wife's hand, scoffing loudly.
"How should I know? My boss doesn't consult me on his decisions."
"But let me warn you all right now—do not disrespect her. If you piss off the higher-ups, they will yank that funding without a second thought."
With a cold, dismissive glare at his in-laws, Vincent turned and haughtily went to find his seat.
He had never thought much of Catherine, viewing her as a dull woman with a pretty face but no substance, and his attitude toward the rest of the family was equally abrasive.
Before, he had kept his disdain somewhat hidden. But now, with his wildly successful business overseas and the fact that he was the one who brought this massive investment to the Flynn Group, he felt entirely superior.
Corinne watched her son-in-law walk away. She knew her daughter was miserable with him, but she didn't dare say a word.
Vincent wasn't someone she could afford to cross right now.
Despite the outward glamour of the Flynn Group tonight, the company was bleeding from the inside out, and her own marriage to Franklin was hanging by a thread. She needed Vincent's wealth and influence to keep her husband in check.
Swallowing her pride, Corinne dragged her daughters into a secluded corner, fuming with panic.
"What do we do? What do we do?! AM Capital sent Scarlett! This is a disaster!"
Sylvia was still trapped in a state of delusion, shaking her head furiously.
"It's a mistake. It has to be! There's no way it's her!"
"She didn't say a word about being the director when she was here just a minute ago! It's a mix-up!"
The sheer magnitude of the blow was driving Sylvia to the edge of a breakdown.
Scarlett had already won the most prestigious architecture award, then became the president of the industry association, and now she was suddenly transforming into their corporate overlord?
