Chapter 124

jane didn’t answer. Honestly, she had no idea who Dr. Hanson even was.

Lyra didn’t wait for her to answer. Her gaze landed on the woman, and she pulled out a blank Soul Deck from her pocket

Jane saw it. “You’re going to seal her inside?”

Lyra held the Soul Deck, her fingers rubbing the edge back and forth.

“I want to,” she said.

Her voice was muffled. “But I’m scared.”

Jane tilted her head.

Lyra stared at the woman’s face, her lips pressed together. “Her soul energy is almost gone. If I wake her up…”

She paused. “Waking her up would use up what little soul energy she has left. If she can’t hold on in this state…

Jane waited for her to finish before saying anything.

“And there’s more,” Lyra said.

Lyra took a half-step back, her gaze moving from the woman to the ghosts packed along both sides.

“If the Ghost Wall loses one, it’ll get weaker,” she added.

“But what really scares me is, what if she’s the heart of this Ghost Wall?”

As soon as Lyra said that, Jane felt her soul shudder for a second.

“You saw those memories in the Scrying Orb too, didn’t you, Jane?” Lyra said.

Lyra’s fingers clenched tighter around the Soul Deck.

“She was in the same sect as Dr. Hanson and my mom. She swore an oath to their master, and she’s mastered the Vital Flame Cultivation.

“Someone like her wouldn’t be just another piece in the Ghost Wall.”

Jane finally spoke up. “You’re afraid she’s the heart of the Ghost Wall, and if you take her out, the Ghost Wall might collapse

“Yeah,” Lyra replied.

Lyra lifted the Soul Deck to her face, then lowered it. “If the Ghost Wall falls apart, things could get really bad.”

Jane spread out her soul perception, once again covering the ghosts surrounding the woman.

What she sensed made her fall silent for a couple of seconds.

“Lyra, I’ll be honest with you,” Jane said.

“Go ahead,” Lyra replied.

“Her soul energy is definitely weaker than the others around her. Way weaker,” Jane said.

Lyra’s hand dropped, and she looked down at her own transparent toes.

Chapter 124

Her burning curiosity about her mom and the fear of causing something terrible just for her own selfish reasons were at war in her mind.

“Forget it.” Lyra said, shoving the Soul Deck back into her pocket without hesitation.

Jane glanced at her.

“I’m not taking that risk, Lyra said, lifting her head. “I can’t risk the whole Ghost Wall just because I want answers. Maybe nothing bad would happen, but I’m not willing to gamble.”

Her soul flickered, then drifted back to the woman, hovering close.

“Should I call you Aunt?” Lyra whispered, but the woman didn’t react at all.

“Aunt, I can’t take you with me, but I’ll come back,” Lyra said softly.

Lyra stepped back, moving to stand beside Jane.

She didn’t look at the woman’s face anymore. Instead, she turned her head, her gaze fixed on the swirling gray mist outside the Ghost Wall, her thoughts whirling with worry and possibilities.

“Jane, Lyra called out.

“Yeah?” Jane replied.

“Do you remember you can absorb Wraith energy?” Lyra asked.

Jane hesitated. “Yeah, I remember.”

“When you take in that energy, you get a power boost, your soul energy increases, and even your Soul Deck upgrades,” Lyra said.

Lyra turned to Jane, her eyes locked on her. “You’re a soul, and so are they.”

“When you absorb that energy, you get stronger,” Lyra said.

Lyra pointed at the Ghost Wall. “What about them? If they take in that energy, could it help them recover?”

Jane’s soul shivered, not out of fear, but because Lyra’s idea was so quick, her mind just couldn’t catch up.

“At the end of the day, we’re all souls,” Lyra said, her words speeding up. “If you can absorb it, why can’t they? It doesn’t matter whose soul energy it is, it’s all the same.”

Jane opened her mouth, but nothing came out. Lyra was right. She was a soul, and so were the ones trapped in the Ghost Wall. They were all made of the same stuff, powered by the same energy.

If she could absorb that weird energy to get stronger, then in theory, if the souls inside the Ghost Wall got some too, then soul energy should be able to recover.

“Wait, Jane said, turning to Lyra.

“You’re right, we’re all souls at the core, but there’s a problem,” Jane said.

“What is it?” Lyra asked.

“I absorb energy consciously,” Jane said.

Jane pointed at the dazed souls trapped in the Ghost Wall. “Look at them, they’ve got almost no consciousness left, their eyes are hollow, and they can’t even muster the strength to speak.”

“How could they possibly absorb it themselves?” Jane asked.

Lyra hovered in the air, tilting her head. That was a real roadblock.

The souls in the Ghost Wall were basically on “low power mode. All their soul energy was being funneled into the ground to keep the Ghost Wall intact, draining whatever little they had left. They could barely even twitch a finger

“Then she doesn’t have to do it herself,” Lyra said.

Jane looked at her.

“She can receive it passively,” Lyra said, clenching her fist. “We can channel the energy into her.”

“Channel it?” Jane echoed.

“Yeah, channel it,” Lyra replied.

Lyra drifted forward, facing the woman again. “If she can’t absorb it herself, then we’ll transfer it to her.

Jane fell silent, lowering her head to look at her own hands. Her soul’s palms glowed faintly, that was the outward sign of her soul energy.

“In theory…” Jane began, her voice slow and thoughtful.

“Soul energy can be transferred between souls,” she said.

Lyra’s eyes lit up. “Yes! That’s exactly it.”

“But, Jane said, lifting her head.

“How am I supposed to transfer energy to a soul that’s completely unconscious? Using soul energy to kill or to envelop objects, it just comes naturally to me. But actually transferring energy? I don’t think I know how to do that.

Lyra froze, her mind racing as she flipped through the notes Ms. Reed had put together, the ones she’d gone over agam and again that morning.

Embrace Simplicity said, “Man is in the air, and the air is in man.”

Page thirty-seven of the handwritten notes: “Gather the flame in your left palm, release it from your right

“Use your will to command the flame.”

“Vital Flame Cultivation, Lyra blurted out.

Jane looked at her, confused.
