Chapter 135

Chapter 135

Lyra didn’t answer Jane’s question.

“Jane, you’re faster than me, so don’t wait up.” Lyra said.

She pointed to the east door: ‘Scout ahead and mark any treasure chest clearly. I’ll follow room by room.

Jane shot her a look.

“This way, we’ll be more efficient,” Lyra added. “But!”

She pointed at the countdown timer on the wall.

“When the timer’s almost at 20 seconds, come back to me. Don’t get separated when the maze shifts, Lyra said

Jane nodded. “Got it.”

Her soul phased through the wall and disappeared toward the east.

Lyra pushed open the door to the third room.

Draconia Strategic Command Center.

The main screen showed fifty feeds at once, with Lyra and Lil Lily’s streams enlarged in the center.

Lana stood in front of the screens. “Fifty players, all scattered in different rooms.”

Garrett frowned at the screens. “Why aren’t there any coordinates for these rooms?

He took a couple steps forward, tapping the edge of the screen. “Normally, a maze should have a coordinate system, like Al. A2, A3, B1, B2, B3, that sort of thing.”

Ms. Reed was also watching the screens. She guessed, “Probably so we can’t give the players coordinates”

She lifted her chin toward the screen. “Look, the feeds only show the inside of the rooms. You can’t tell where you are at all. Not even a single number on the doors.”

Garrett glanced at Ms. Reed, then turned back to the screens. “That’s sneaky,” he grumbled.

Lana didn’t respond. She turned to the tech team.

“Draw a map of the maze based on where the fifty players are and which way they’re heading,” she ordered.

“Yes, ma’am!” the tech team replied.

The tech specialists jumped into action, the sound of frantic typing filling the air.

Meanwhile, the Draconia Live Channel was blowing up with comments.

[momo: They’re separated! They’re separated! They’re separated! Can this damn game really do that?]

[BornToCuss: Is this game nuts or what? Splitting them up? Can’t handle playing fair, huh?]

Chapter 135

[Another DayAlive: Lil Lily’s all alone in that room. I’m freaking out!)

(LyraSuperfan: Chill, chill. It’s still hiding time. The Wraiths haven’t even shown up yet. Don’t panic.

[LuckyKoi: What do we do? I’m already freaking out. Lil Lily’s only in her second round! Lady Luck, please share my luck with Lil Lily and Goddess Lyra!]

[No More Nutrient Drinks: Don’t be scared. Lily Sprite and Goddess Lyra got this.]

[Veggie Edition: The empty treasure chest thing is just disgusting. Game, are you for real?]

[BornToCuss: Damn it! They make us hunt for treasure chests, but they’re empty, don’t count for the mission, and even leave a mocking note. That’s messed up beyond belief!]

[Had Fruit Already: Game, how low can you go? Where’s your limit?]

[GoDraconia: There’s still over twenty minutes of hiding time left. Go. Lil Lily, find that treasure chest! Go, Goddess Lyra. find Lil Lily!]

Lil Lily turned the room upside down.

She checked under the bed, inside the cabinet, the drawers, and every nook and cranny, but there was no treasure chest.

She sat back down on the edge of the bed and pulled the whistle out from beneath her collar.

Goddess Lyra had warned her not to blow the whistle unless she knew for sure how the Wraiths tracked people.

But it was still hiding time, and the Wraiths hadn’t started hunting yet.

Lil Lily thought, ‘So blowing it once should be fine, right?”

Lil Lily brought the whistle to her lips, gave it a tentative try, and blew softly.

“Beep-“It was barely more than a whisper.

She waited ten seconds, but nothing happened. The room stayed silent, and the countdown timer on the wall kept ticking down.

Feeling a bit braver, Lil Lily took a deep breath, sealed her lips around the whistle, and gave it a strong blow.

Beep-

The whistle pierced through the walls, its sound rippling out in all directions.

Lil Lily clutched the whistle, ears perked for any reply, but there was nothing.

Lil Lily pursed her lips, a little disappointed, but she shook it off. She hopped off the bed, headed for the south door, pushed it open, and stepped inside.

Lyra didn’t hear the whistle. She was busy rummaging through the cabinets in the fourth room, while Wraithslayer scratched a [4] into the wall.

She was too far away to hear it, but someone else did.

Alex stood in a room. holding Safehouse Chalk, and was sizing up the walls.

A whistle sounded from the east.

He froze, wondering. A whistle? Who would blow one in this maze? Then he remembered the Draconia kid had found a whistle item last round.

Alex slipped the chalk back into his pocket, cocked his ear toward the east, and listened. The whistle didn’t sound again.

He thought, ‘Draconia player or not, a whistle means someone nearby. Someone I can team up with, or use
