Lyra.wasn’t in a hurry to find anyone. She wanted to check how many rooms there were first, just like Jane mentioned.

She picked a new direction and carved a circle into the east wall.

“Clara, let’s go,” Lyra called out.

“So, what’s next?” Clara asked.

“We’re counting the rooms,” Lyra replied.

Clara didn’t ask anything else and just followed Lyra. With the game occasionally announcing deaths in the background the two started checking out the rooms.

First room: bedroom, empty.

Second room: kitchen, also empty.

Third room: Lyra opened the door and saw a man crouched behind a cabinet. He looked up sharply when he heard the door, gripping an iron pipe. Lyra gave him a quick look and kept moving.

He just stared as she walked through and left by the other door, never saying a word.

Room four, five, six…

The seventh room was a storage room piled with cardboard boxes and old furniture. A woman huddled behind a box in the corner and shrank back when Lyra came in. Lyra glanced over her, stepped over the clutter, and pushed open the east door.

Room eight, nine…

Lyra pushed open the tenth door and spotted the mark on the east wall. “Here we are,” she said.

Clara drifted over to her side, eyeing the mark on the wall. “Did we just loop around?”

“Yeah,” Lyra replied.

Lyra used her fingertip to trace the scratch. “Jane guessed it right.”

“There aren’t many rooms. The game is using some kind of spatial gimmick, every door doesn’t lead to a new room, you’re just looping through the same set of rooms,” Lyra explained.

“If you don’t leave a mark, you could open a hundred doors and think you’ve explored a hundred rooms, but you’re just circling around the same batch,” Lyra added.

Clara frowned. “So that’s how it works in the east-west direction…

“Ten rooms,” Lyra replied.

“Starting from where I marked, I went through ten doors to the cast and ended up right back where I started,” Lyra said.

“What about north-south?” Clara asked.

“If the pattern holds, it should be ten rooms as well, but I’m not certain,” Lyra said.

Lyra glanced up at the countdown on the wall.

“Once this round ends, we’ll go check it out,” Lyra said.

Soon, the flip ended. Lyra headed for the north door and drew a triangle mark on the wall again.

“Let’s go.” Lyra said.

First room to the north, then the second, then the third….

When Lyra pushed open the seventh door, she locked eyes with Lydia, who was standing right in the middle of the room, a Stellar Hammer in each hand.

“Lyra!” Lydia called out, her voice full of surprise.

Lydia’s eyes widened in excitement as she hurried over, dropping her voice. “I’ve got something big to tell you…”

“Just follow me,” Lyra interrupted, already striding north.

Lydia swallowed her words, but didn’t hesitate. She tossed the Stellar Hammers onto her shoulder and quickly caught up to

Lyra.

“What are you up to?” Lydia asked.

“Counting rooms,” Lyra replied.

“You’re counting rooms?” Lydia echoed, still a bit puzzled.

“Ten rooms from east to west. Now I’m checking north to south,” Lyra replied.

Lydia paused, then her eyes widened as she got it. “Wait, so the maze isn’t endless? There’s actually a fixed number of

rooms?”

“Yeah, the rooms just loop around. If you don’t leave a mark, you’d never figure it out,” Lyra said.

Lyra went through the eighth, ninth, and tenth doors without stopping. Sure enough, the mark was exactly as she left it.

“Ten rooms, Lyra said.

Lyra turned around. “If the rooms line up the same way both horizontally and vertically, then this mission is a 10×10 grid, one hundred rooms total.”

It was almost exactly what Jane predicted. Once Lyra confirmed it, she turned to Lydia. “So, what’s the big news you wanted to tell me?”

Lydia’s face grew serious. “Lyra, the Hunters in this game aren’t fixed, they can change.”

Lyra glanced at the Stellar Hammers in Lydia’s hands, blood still smeared on them.

“Who did you kill?” Lyra asked.

“Paul from Gallia,” Lydia replied.

Lydia hoisted the Stellar Hammers. “These were his weapons. After he died, the game made me the new Hunter.”

“So, what are the win conditions?” Lyra asked.

“At least two kills. If you take out five players, you get to choose your reward from the prize pool,” Lydia explained.

Lyra nodded. “Same as the original Hunter’s win conditions.”

According to Lydia, the game kept ten Hunters in play by replacing any who died. That made Tanaka, the Hunter Lyra had killed, the odd case. Since her requirement had not doubled, the game might have randomly picked someone else to fill the gap.

“Lyra, has your country reached out to you yet?” Lydia asked, suddenly changing the subject.

“Not yet. Why?” Lyra replied.

Then you probably don’t know who the other Hunters are. The original ten were Sophia from Sambadia, Alex from Aurelia Tanaka from Niphonia…” Lydia rattled off the names.

She paused, shooting Lyra a look. “And you, and Lina.”

Lyra raised an eyebrow. “Lina’s a Hunter too?”

“Yeah,” Lydia replied.

“This doesn’t seem random at all. It’s like the game is cherry-picking its Hunters. Lina’s country only has one district left. she’s definitely going to make a move,” Lyra said, thinking it over.

“And with the option to choose your reward, if Lina gets five kills, she’ll probably wipe out all the Wraiths in a district,” Lyra

added.

“Besides Lina, Sophia’s country only has one district left too,” Lydia quickly added, catching on.

“This game is seriously ruthless,” Lyra scoffed.

Lydia clenched her weapons. “Lyra, what’s your plan?”

“What about you?” Lyra asked.

“I have to finish my mission,” Lydia said bluntly. “I still need one more kill, but I won’t make a move on any of you.”

“I know,” Lyra replied.

Lyra switched gears. “By the way, if we split up later and you run into Lil Lily, let her know someone’s got their eye on her. Tell Jane to stay sharp.”

“Who is it?” Lydia frowned. “I’ll just take him out myself, I’m still one kill short anyway.”

“No idea. All I know is it’s a male player who speaks English,” Lyra replied.

Lyra paused, then remembered the list Lydia had just given her. “From the Hunters you mentioned earlier, besides Alex, is there any other English-speaking male Hunter?”

Lydia clearly caught on too. Most players were just trying to hide, but Hunters were the only ones who’d go after others, either for their mission or just out of greed.

“There’s also Blake from Marsupia; he speaks English too,” Lydia said, quickly running through the list. There had been five male Hunters. She had killed one, Lyra another, leaving three, and Jung-hoo spoke Hanmarkian.

“Alright, let’s make sure we keep those two on our radar,” Lyra said.
