Chapter 152

Lyra flipped the paper over and back, her fingers tracing the words “designated target” a couple of times.
“The game has never actually targeted anyone for elimination before,” she said.
Jane hovered in front of her. “You think this paper wasn’t sent by the game itself?”
“Not sure,” Lyra replied.
Lyra folded the paper and slipped it into her pocket. “If it was sent by the game, that means the rules are changing. Before. Hunters could go after anyone they wanted, but now they’re being told who to target.”
“And if it wasn’t sent by the game?” Lil Lily asked, squatting beside her, eyes locked on Lyra.
“Then someone’s been sneaking things into the treasure chests, using the Hunters to do their dirty work,” Lyra replied.
Lil Lily gulped nervously.
Sergei leaned against the wall, shifting his grip on the iron pipe. “Lyra, you mean some player might be quietly gunning for someone?”
“Not sure,” Lyra replied. “The items in the room reset themselves once a player leaves. Players shouldn’t be able to plant fake treasure chests at all, unless the person who set it up was still in the room when Blake got there.”
“But if they never left, how could Blake be so convinced it was an official game mission?” Lil Lily asked.
Everyone fell silent, lost in thought.
“So it’s probably the game targeting us,” Sergei said after thinking it through.
“Doesn’t matter if it’s the game or someone else, whatever they’re planning, it’s not going to work on us,” Lyra said, scanning the room before heading for the west door.
“Alright, let’s move. After we split up, everyone watch your back,” she added.
The others followed her.
Lil Lily walked beside Lyra. Her hairpin sat quietly in her hair, not glowing.
“Goddess Lyra, do you think there might be more than one of those papers?” Lil Lily asked.
Lyra didn’t slow down. “Huh?”
“Blake had one, but what if other Hunters have them too?” Lil Lily pressed.
“If every Hunter got a paper with my name on it, then whoever takes me out gets those rewards,” Lil Lily said.
Lyra shot her a glance. Lil Lily’s face was tense, not scared, but her fingers were twisting the edge of her shirt, betraying just how nervous she was.
“Yeah, that’s possible,” Lyra replied, not hiding the truth.
Lil Lily pressed her lips together.
“But it could also be that there’s only one,” Lyra said, pushing the door open. “At least, I haven’t gotten one, Sergei hasn’t either, and when I saw Lydia earlier, she didn’t mention anything about it.”

Chapter 152
“Besides, if the game really wanted you dead, it wouldn’t just send Blake with a crossbow,” Lyra added.
“Then what would it do?” Lil Lily asked.
“At the very least, it’d give them something strong enough to beat Jane,” Lyra replied.
Lil Lily blinked, then turned to look at Jane.
Jane hovered behind them, her voice calm. “She’s right. Blake’s crossbow couldn’t even pierce my soul power
“If the game really wanted you dead, it would’ve listed my weaknesses on that note, or handed the Hunter weapon that could actually hurt souls. But it didn’t,” Jane added.
“Exactly!” Sergei jumped in. “When a Hunter came after me, they whipped out a soul-harming item, see, this bell right here” He held up the bell for everyone to see.
Lil Lily finally relaxed her shoulders, letting out a breath. “So the game isn’t really trying to kill me?”
“Don’t worry, Lil Lily. As long as I’m here, you’re safe,” Jane said, flashing her a reassuring smile.
As time ticked by and more players got eliminated, the chances of anyone running into each other kept getting slimmer.
Some players were hiding out, some were still hunting for treasure chests, and others were going on killing sprees to finish their missions.
In the northwest corner of the maze, Alex pushed open a door, the stench of blood hit him hard.
Jung-hoo was slumped against the wall, his left pant leg ripped in two, one half tied around his calf as a makeshift bandage, the cloth completely soaked with blood.
He gripped a combat knife. The second he heard the door, he raised the blade, ready to fight.
Alex didn’t step inside. He just leaned against the doorframe, holding up both hands. “Relax, it’s just me.”
Jung-hoo stared at him. “Boss, where’s your weapon?”
“I’ve got it stashed, Alex said, his gaze dropping to Jung-hoo’s leg. “Can that leg handle another maze flip?”
Jung-hoo didn’t answer.
Alex asked, “How many kills have you managed so far?”
Jung-hoo just kept quiet.
Alex guessed, “None?”
Jung-hoo still didn’t answer, his silence was answer enough.
Alex glanced at the countdown for the next maze flip, then pulled out the Safehouse Chalk. “Forget it. Just come hide with me for this round. I don’t want you dying out here when the maze flips again.”
“Boss…” Jung-hoo’s heart skipped a beat. He wasn’t worried about getting offed by Alex in the safehouse, given how messed up he was, Alex could finish him anytime. No way Alex would waste an item on him.
After drawing the safehouse on the wall, Alex opened the door. “Can you get in by yourself?”
“I can,” Jung-hoo replied, using his combat knife as a crutch to stand up, then limped inside.

Chapter 132
Alex followed him in and shut the door behind them.

At the command center, Garrett said, “Alex’s safehouse is basically like soul invisibility,” watching the two vanish from the screen. He frowned, feeling uneasy now that he couldn’t keep an eye on them.
“Fifteen minutes in a safehouse isn’t just about hiding,” Ms. Reed pointed out.
“Alex pulled some healing items too. They’re not as good as Lil Lily’s, but they should do the trick for Jung-hoo. Bet when they come out, his leg will be good as new,” Ms. Reed figured.
“Would Alex really use such a rare healing item on someone else?” Garrett asked, sounding doubtful.
“Ms. Reed’s right. Alex will probably use it on Jung-hoo. Otherwise, there’s no point in helping him. The safehouse only ass fifteen minutes; if Jung-hoo isn’t healed, he’s walking right back into danger. Once his leg’s fixed, his odds improve.” Lana agreed.
If Alex isn’t going to heal Jung-hoo, then there’s no reason to use the safehouse at all. He wouldn’t waste an item just to put on a show for everyone, acting like he’s some super loyal ally.
Inside the safehouse, Alex stood by the door. “How bad’s your injury? We’re only halfway through the game.”
“I don’t really know, but at least the bone wasn’t hit. I just lost a lot of blood,” Jung-hoo said, sounding dejected.
“So, did the game give you anything special for your weapon? With all these bodies piling up, you haven’t killed a single person. If you make it to the end without finishing your Hunter mission, you’re still a dead man,” Alex pointed out.
