The team kept pushing forward, and the Wraiths lurking around were still as troublesome as ever. Lyra stayed behind the soul squad, finishing off any leftovers with sharp moves.
There are more up ahead.” Jane said, pointing to the collapsed building on the right.
Clara and Ivana rushed in from both sides, and with two dull thuds, the heads of two Wraiths burst apart at the same time.
“Three over here,” Lyra called out, pointing to another spot.
The three souls spread out, and with three dull thuds, the Wraiths dropped one after another.
The team was moving faster and faster, their teamwork getting smoother with every step.
Zoe trailed behind, her camera rolling nonstop. Every so often, she’d glance up to check the surroundings, her attention split between the footage and the smallest shifts in the environment.
After wiping out another wave of Wraiths, their collective screams echoing through the air, the team finally caught wind of something else.
Thud.
Thud.
Thud.
A heavy, muffled sound rumbled in from the distance.
Lyra froze mid-step, and Jane’s soul power instantly swept forward. Her whole soul tightened, ready to spring into action.
“Everyone, stay sharp.” Jane said, her voice low. “It’s coming!”
Lyra and Zoe exchanged a quick glance.
The ten souls quickly shifted formation, forming a protective ring around Lyra and Zoe in the center, but leaving their line of sight clear. Jane and Ivana took the lead, poised to attack the second anything happened.
“Thud, thud, thud.” The footsteps were getting closer, heavier, and clearer with every beat.
Jane spoke up, her voice tense. “Get ready.”
Lyra and Zoe brought their binoculars up, and soon, that thing finally appeared in their sights.
Sure enough, this one was nothing like the Wraiths they’d seen on the outskirts.
It had massive legs and a spiked tail. Its upper body was hunched, and each arm ended in three curved bone spikes, their blackened tips looking poisonous. A grayish-white shell covered its body, and each step punched a shallow pit into the ground.
But its head was even more disturbing. It had three eyes on its face, each with a dark red pupil, and a gaping maw lined with razor-sharp teeth. Black tentacles of all different lengths writhed out from its mouth.
Lyra lowered her binoculars, rubbing the goosebumps on her arms. “Man, that thing is ugly.”
Zoe put hers down too. “Three eyes up front. Maybe there are more on the back?”
Lyra shivered. “Zoe, stop talking about it, you’re making it even scarier.”

The Wraith kept coming, each step making the ground shake. It had already spotted them, fixing all three eyes right on them.
Lyra-looked at her. “Zoe, how do we take this thing down?”
Zoe swept her gaze over the Wraith, quickly sizing it up.
“Hold up, don’t go charging in yet,” Zoe said.
She drew her standard-issue pistol from her belt and snapped the slide back.
Zoe said, “I’ll try normal weapons first, then hit it with soul power, and finally Vital Flame. We’ll go one by one and see which attack actually hurts this new species.”
Lyra nodded. “Got it.”
The Wraith was getting closer, and when it was about 260 feet out, it suddenly barreled straight toward them.
“Spread out!” Jane barked.
The souls scattered to either side, and Zoe stood between Jane and Ivana, leveling her gun and taking aim at the Wraith’s chest.
Bang!
The bullet struck the Wraith’s chest, sparks flew from its grayish-white shell, and the round bounced off, landing on the ground with a metallic clatter.
Zoe’s brow furrowed. ‘It didn’t even penetrate? Was the shell’s defense really that strong?”
The shot only pissed the Wraith off. It let out a low, rumbling roar and picked up even more speed.
“Hit it with soul power!” Jane shouted.
Jane rushed in first, sweeping out soul power to trip the Wraith’s legs. Ivana slipped in from the flank and wrapped its left arm, while the other eight souls split into four groups to bind its right arm, torso, and head.
The Wraith was caught by the soul power, its speed dropping sharply. It struggled in place about a hundred feet away. making a harsh creaking noise beneath its grayish-white shell.
“Strangle it!” Jane barked.
The ten souls pulled in ten different directions at once, their soul power tearing at the Wraith. Its joints snapped with sharp cracks, and its grayish-white shell started to splinter.
“This one’s defense is way tougher than the others,” Clara called out from the battlefield. “It’s way harder to strangle it.”
“And it’s healing even faster,” one of the souls chimed in after tearing off a chunk of the Wraith’s arm. “Those black tentacles are still there, but they’re moving way faster now.”
“Its tongue-tentacles can attack too,” one of the souls yelled as a tentacle whipped right through him. “But it can’t touch us!”
“Its tail can attack too, but…” Ivana didn’t get to finish before things suddenly went sideways.
The Wraith, still trapped by the soul power, let out a furious roar. All three of its eyes flared to life, their dark red pupils glowing even more eerily. Three beams shot out from its eyes, sweeping straight toward the souls.
“Watch out for its eyes!” Jane shouted.

But it was already too late. Two of the beams swept through two souls, punching gaping holes in their outlines and draining their energy fast.
