Catching his drift immediately, Sierra played along. “Not at all. I’ll step aside right now.”
Caleb’s eyes drifted back to Jasmine’s swollen cheek, and a sharp pang of discomfort hit his chest. What he had just said was a mix of truth and lies, but the sudden ache of pity he felt for her right now was entirely real. His playful demeanor vanished, replaced by a cold, heavy tone.
“I’m taking her with me,” he announced.
He signaled Sierra with a quick look, and Sierra immediately took Jasmine by the hand to lead her out. But as they passed Silas, he reached out and grabbed Jasmine’s arm.
“Jasmine…”
“Silas,” Jasmine interrupted, her voice flat. “My face hurts, and my heart hurts even more. Just leave me alone for a while.”
Silas stared at her in silence for a few seconds before his grip finally loosened and he let go.
Caleb gave him a firm pat on the shoulder. “Mr. Vance, if you don’t love her, let her go. Just don’t regret it when you do. Nobody wants to deal with your family’s trashy drama anymore. That’s all I have to say. Best of luck.”
Caleb walked toward the door but paused just before leaving. Slipping his hands into his pockets, he turned around slowly.
“Oh, and Mr. Sterling? That slap today is going to cost you dearly. I’d brace myself if I were you.”
Theodore didn’t think twice about the threat.
What could a kid like him possibly do?
Theodore had been playing this game for decades; he wasn’t about to be intimidated by some wet-behind- the-ears punk.
The hospital room fell dead silent, the remaining family members exchanging uneasy glances. Nobody seemed to want to be the first to break the tension.
Finally, Madeline spoke, her voice laced with venom. “Silas! You saw and heard everything today with your own eyes. I trust you know exactly what needs to be done now.”
“Grandma, you just want me to get a divorce, don’t you?” Silas snapped, his frustration boiling over.
“What do you mean I want you to get a divorce?” Madeline countered sharply. “Do you honestly still think Jasmine is fit to be your wife? After today, does she have any right to remain a daughter-in-law of the Vance family?”
Silas’s mind flashed back to the way Jasmine had looked when she walked out-so resolute, so full of hatred. It felt as though something vital had quietly begun slipping out of his life, leaving behind a hollow, sickening ache.

He wanted to tell her flat out that he wouldn’t divorce Jasmine, but he caught himself. Saying that right now would only push Madeline over the edge and drag them into another massive argument.
Instead, he changed his approach. “Grandma, you heard her. She knows everything. If we force her out right now, you know what she’s like-she won’t hesitate to expose the whole truth to the public/If that happens, the fallout will be catastrophic.”
Madeline knew he was right, but letting Jasmine stay felt like swallowing glass; she simply couldn’t stomach the humiliation.
The room grew tense and quiet again.
“We’ll figure out the divorce later,” Madeline muttered eventually, sounding exhausted. “My old bones can’t take any more of this stress. I’m going home to rest.” She turned to Theodore, her tone softening with regret. “Theodore, I am truly sorry about what happened today. If you’re going to blame anyone, blame my grandson for marrying such an uncultured woman.”
Theodore opened his mouth to reply, but his phone suddenly cut him off. He swiped to answer, visibly irritated.
“Speak!” he barked into the receiver.
As he listened to the voice on the other end, the color completely drained from his face. “What?! How did that happen? Idiots! What do I pay you for if you don’t know a damn thing? I’m on my way!”
He slammed the phone down and immediately dialed another number. “Book me the next flight to Portshire right now. The absolute earliest one you can find!”
Without dropping so much as a goodbye to anyone in the room, Theodore rushed out in a frantic panic. Shortly after, Madeline and Victoria left as well.
Felicity looked at Silas, her eyes welling with tears.
“Silas…”
Silas was already irritated, and hearing her whine his name only made his temper flare further.
“Jasmine is my wife. Your dad slapping her just now-how is that any different from him slapping me in the face?”
Felicity’s tears began to stream down her cheeks. “I didn’t know my dad would suddenly hit her like that…”
“And what about after?” Silas shot back. “Your dad had his hands around her throat, and I didn’t see you doing a thing to stop him.”
“Silas…” Felicity felt a sharp pang in her chest. “Didn’t you see that she hit me? My face is still throbbing.”
Silas didn’t give a damn about her face. All he could hear was the sharp crack of the slap Jasmine had taken, and all he could see was the blood trickling from the corner of her mouth.
“Silas… Felicity pleaded again.
