Still, Sierra couldn’t help but notice how deeply Ethan trusted Caleb. He clearly didn’t keep secrets from

him.

Caleb tossed the crumpled tissue back. “Could you stop hitting me every time you talk?”

“No,” Sierra snapped.

“Careful, or you’ll never get married!”

“Don’t lose any sleep over it.”

Caleb smirked. “Hey, if you end up an old maid, you can always come beg me. For old times’ sake, I’might consider taking you in as a side piece.”

Sierra rolled her eyes. “Oh, I’m profoundly grateful to you and your entire family.”

“Wow,” Caleb said, shaking his head. “Sierra’s on fire today. Who knew she could fire off insults like a machine gun without even pausing for breath?”

“That family deserved every bit of it!” Sierra said fiercely.

“True, but that only treats the symptoms, not the cause,” Caleb noted. “What’s the plan? Are you really going back to that house?”

Jaśmine had been spaced out for a moment before realizing Caleb was addressing her. “I have to go back. There’s no question about that.”

As for how she would return, that depended entirely on the Vance family’s next move. But one thing was certain: she needed to fast-track her plans. The Vance household was a living hell.

“Wait a second,” Sierra interrupted, remembering her earlier question. “You still haven’t told us how Ethan knew Jasmine was in trouble. Is he psychic or something?”

Caleb checked his watch. “I’ve got things to take care of, so I’m heading out. Call me if anything happens.” With that, he stood up and walked toward the door.

“Caleb! Are you doing this on purpose?” Sierra yelled after him. “Answer the question!”

Caleb didn’t even turn around. “Because Ethan actually has a brain. Unlike you, who’s as dense as a brick.”

Sierra rolled up her sleeves, dying to punch him.

Caleb headed down to the garage and got into his car. Instead of driving off immediately, he rolled down the window, lit a cigarette, and dialed Ethan’s number.

As soon as the line connected, Caleb took a drag. “How are things on your end?”

“Judy injured her ankle during dance practice,” Ethan replied. “Fortunately, it’s not serious. It’ll take about a month to heal, and there won’t be any permanent damage.”

He laid out the facts clearly and concisely. Caleb caught on instantly, but a lingering question kept nagging at him.

“Be honest with me, Ethan. Where do your loyalties actually lie right now?”

Ethan chuckled softly, “Are you trying to ask if I’m playing two sides at once?”

Caleb couldn’t stay serious for more than three seconds. “Not at all. That implies malicious intent, and I’d never use a phrase like that to describe my favorite boy, Ethan.”

The conversation fell into a brief silence before Ethan spoke up. “I really am worried about her. After all, she’s dealing with a lot, completely on her own.”

“Do you love her?” Caleb asked.

“I’ve always been honest with you,” Ethan said. “I did love her once.”

“And now?”

“My feelings are kept strictly within bounds.”

Caleb smiled. “That’s exactly the answer I expected.”

It was a perfect moment of unspoken understanding between the two friends.

“Hypothetically speaking…” Caleb started, his tone hovering somewhere between playful and sincere. “If she gets a divorce, can I pursue her?”

Ethan didn’t hesitate for a single second. “That’s your prerogative.”

“You wouldn’t mind at all?” Caleb pressed.

“Even if it isn’t you, it’ll be someone else,” Ethan said. “I’d actually prefer it to be you. At the very least, I know you’d never hurt her.”

“But what about you?”

“I have my responsibilities.”

“You only got engaged to give your mother peace of mind before she passed away,” Caleb argued. “If there’s no love between you two, why tie yourself down to some arbitrary obligation? It’s better to just part ways amicably.”

Ethan’s voice remained perfectly calm. “I promised my mother I would marry her, and I can’t break my word. Besides, our upcoming marriage now involves major family interests. It’s not that easy to untangle.”

“So you’re really going to throw away your entire life just for the sake of family business?”

Ethan went quiet for a moment. “We’ll see.”

Caleb didn’t want to pursue the topic any further. It was getting depressing. He deeply admired how
