The company responsible for transporting that specific export shipment happened to be Theodore’s logistics group. Right now, the entire cargo was being held at Portshire Harbor under a string of pretexis, including “incomplete documentation” and “sensitive cargo.”
Word was that the breach-of-contract penalty for Theodore’s shipment was three times the value of the goods themselves. If he actually had to pay up, a notorious penny-pincher like Theodore would probably spit blood from sheer rage. Just picturing Theodore throwing a temper tantrum right about now made Caleb want to laugh.
Ethan sounded slightly apologetic. “The only issue is that Theodore is going to view you as his sworn enemy now.”
Since Caleb had been the one to step in and protect Jasmine today, Theodore would naturally jump to the conclusion that Caleb was behind the shipping delay.
Caleb couldn’t care less. “Let him view me as an enemy. If anyone thought we were related, I’d deny it out of sheer embarrassment.” He was starting to sound a lot like Sierra.
“Ethan?” A soft female voice with a distinct Portshire accent called out in the background.
Taking the hint, Caleb prepared to wrap up the call. “I’ll let you go.”
“I’m coming back tomorrow,” Ethan said.
“So soon? You should take it easy and get some rest. Everything’s under control here, don’t worry.”
“It’s mostly because I have a major meeting tomorrow with the new technical team regarding system development.”
An idea suddenly struck Caleb, and a mischievous grin spread across his face. “Sierra started working at your company, right? Do me a favor.”
“Go ahead.” Ethan said.
“Work her to the absolute bone.”
Ethan went silent.
Judy rolled into the room in her wheelchair. “You’re going back tomorrow?”
Ethan put his phone away. “Yeah.”
“So soon?”
“There are things I need to take care of at the office.”
Judy reached out toward him. “Give me a hand, will you?”
When she had needed to use the restroom earlier, Ethan had felt it was inappropriate for him to help, so

he had the nurse wheel her in. They had never been physically intimate, and Judy had felt a bit awkward herself, so she hadn’t thought much of it at the time.
But right now, the distance between them felt wider than ever.
She had expected Ethan to sweep her up in his arms and carry her to the bed. Instead, he simply took hold of her arms and supported her weight as she shuffled over onto the mattress.
Judy didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “Ethan, we’re engaged. Do we really still need to be this proper with each other?”
Ethan’s expression remained perfectly neutral, masking whatever he was feeling. But his response was brutally honest.
“I’m just not used to it.”
Judy knew exactly what he meant. They had been engaged for three years, yet they had spent that entire time living merely as friends. Or perhaps, less than friends.
For the past three years, both of them had been entirely consumed by their respective careers, rarely keeping in touch. Their only real interactions happened when they had to play the part of a happy couple for their families. Even though they lived in the same city of Portshire, they might as well have been on opposite sides of the world.
And for a long time, both of them had been perfectly content with this arrangement. Because he didn’t care for her, and she didn’t love him.
As time dragged on, their parents began to notice the lack of progress and started dropping hints—and then outright demands-for them to finally set a wedding date. Having completely moved on from her last failed relationship, Judy felt ready for a fresh start. She wanted to give things a real chance with her fiancé. Maybe she would even fall in love with him. After all, Ethan was the most eligible bachelor in Portshire, a man countless wealthy socialites dreamed of marrying,
Brushing off his aloofness, Judy gave him an elegant smile. “It’s fine. We can take things slow.”
Ethan stood by the window, offering no reply. Outside, the landscape was lush and green, bright as springtime. But back in Rivercrest, winter had already set in, and the riverside city would be freezing by nightfall.
Suddenly, a solitary figure flashed through his mind-a lonely woman sitting by the floor-to-ceiling windows at Moonlight Terrace, staring out into the night, lost in thought.
Judy stared at his tall, lean back, framed by the warm glow of the setting sun like a beautiful painting.
Her ankle injury had been a complete accident, but this man showing up to visit her was an even bigger surprise. Still, Judy knew perfectly well that Ethan hadn’t come here on his own accord.
“Ethan, did it upset you when your father told you to come see me?”
Ethan pulled himself from his thoughts and turned around. “No. It was only right that I come visit.”
