“Ethan, I know that one day, you will fall for me. You’ll love me, and you’ll come to my side completely on your own.”

Later that evening, Jasmine’s phone rang. It was Eleanor.

Before Jasmine could even say hello, Eleanor launched into a barrage of accusations.

“Where on earth are you? I thought you were the ultimate devoted daughter. Why aren’t you at the hospital? How could you just leave your father there all by himself?”

Jasmine had just scooped up a spoonful of Margaret’s scrambled eggs, but suddenly, she lost her appetite. She offered a quick, vague excuse to brush her off.

“I came back to grab a few things. I’ll be over later.”

Eleanor’s voice dripped with sarcasm. “Well, you’re the great devoted daughter. Just make sure you don’t drop the ball when it actually matters.”

Jasmine’s cheek was already throbbing. Now, her heart began to ache too.

As if determined to make her miserable, Eleanor pressed on. “And this so-called specialist you found? He doesn’t look like he knows what he’s doing at all. Let’s just hope he isn’t as unreliable as you are.”

That was the last straw. Jasmine was done playing nice with her stepmother.

“Isn’t Hugh Dad’s biological son?” Jasmine countered. “At a critical time like this, does his son not need to show any devotion? And what about you? Aren’t you my dad’s wife? Your husband is lying in the ICU, yet you have the peace of mind to go home and get a good night’s sleep. It looks like you don’t care all that much about your husband after all.”

Eleanor’s voice shrieked. “Jasmine! You ungrateful brat! Are you completely above criticism now? Every time I say something, you have to argue back! Have you lost all respect for your mother?!”

Jasmine asked, her voice calm and measured, “Do you have any respect for me as your daughter?”

“I…” Eleanor stammered.

“If you respect me, I’ll respect you,” Jasmine said. “But if you don’t, why on earth should I?”

Eleanor was left utterly speechless.

“I want to be a good daughter, but I’m not going to blindly obey you, so stop trying to guilt-trip me. I’m no saint, Eleanor. I’m not going to let you order me around anymore. It’s been over twenty years. You’ve had your fill, and I’ve had enough.”

Eleanor was stunned into silence for a long moment.

“What-what is that supposed to mean?!” she stammered.

‘Don’t forget what you promised me yesterday.” Jasmine said. “Until Dad recovers, you need to play the part of a good mother, even if you’re just acting. Once he’s better, if you’re still worried about whether i keep my word, I can leave the Thorne family.”

Eleanor blinked, caught off guard. “Leave?”

“By leave, I mean cutting ties with you entirely.”

Eleanor looked utterly incredulous. “You want to cut ties with me?”

Any trace of heartache or attachment Jasmine once felt was completely gone.

She wanted nothing to do with the Vance family or the Thorne family anymore.

“Isn’t that what you’ve always wanted most?”

This actually made Eleanor hesitate. It was true she was terrified Jasmine would try to fight Hugh for the family inheritance, which was why she wanted her married off as soon as possible. It didn’t matter if the man loved her or not, as long as she left the Thorne household and became someone else’s daughter-in- law. But she had never considered going as far as legally cutting ties.

Besides, after this recent incident with borrowing the money, Eleanor realized Jasmine wasn’t completely useless. She might actually be of great help to the Thorne family in the future.

Eleanor hesitated for a few moments, her tone softening. “When did I ever say I wanted to cut ties with you? You’re just making things up.”

Jasmine let out a cold, humorless laugh. “Or are you just afraid that if we cut ties, you won’t be able to use me anymore?”

A wave of guilt washed over Eleanor. She couldn’t believe Jasmine had guessed exactly what she was thinking.

“Actually, what I really want to tell you is…” Jasmine sighed, a barely audible sound of utter disappointment. “I’m not as stupid as you think I am. I didn’t fight you because I knew I had to play by your rules under your roof. I didn’t take what was mine because I have a father who loves me, and I didn’t want to put him in a difficult position. If I actually wanted to fight you and take what’s mine, you couldn’t stop me.”

Her voice wasn’t raised, but it carried a sharp, undeniable authority.

Eleanor could no longer be sure if the person talking to her was truly the daughter she had raised for twenty-eight years. She froze for what felt like ages.

“Jasmine…”

“Don’t call me that,” Jasmine interrupted ruthlessly. “Don’t slap me across the face and then pretend to be a loving mother, tossing me a few kind words like they’re a reward. It only gives me the false impression that I’m a child who actually has a mother’s love.”

Eleanor wanted to lose her temper, but for some reason, the anger wouldn’t come. She couldn’t argue with
