Jasmine let out a self-deprecating laugh. “I’ve given so much to this family, yet you still treat me like this. Don’t you think it’s about time you showed me some actual decency?”
“And when have I ever treated you badly?” Eleanor countered, though her voice lacked conviction.
Tired of wasting her breath, Jasmine cut straight to the question she had been dying to ask. For the sake the years we spent as mother and daughter, can you just tell me who my biological parents are?”
Eleanor’s hand shook violently against her phone, but she quickly pulled herself together.
“Why are you suddenly bringing this up?”
“I have a right to know where I came from,” Jasmine said quietly.
Jasmine had asked Eleanor this question once before, but Eleanor had flown into a rage and scolded her into silence. This time, she didn’t lose her temper. Instead, she adopted a perfectly pleasant tone.
“I have no idea who your birth parents are. I adopted you from an orphanage.”
Jasmine’s heart sank. “Which orphanage?”
“It wasn’t in Rivercrest,” Eleanor replied. “Besides, I heard that place shut down over a decade ago.”
Jasmine dropped the subject. She had a nagging feeling that Eleanor was lying.
How could anyone forget the details of something so significant? It was far more likely that she simply refused to tell her. After all, what kind of orphanage would just happen to have a child who perfectly met all of Eleanor’s specific demands?
Jasmine realized her only hope now lay with Arthur. Perhaps once her father woke up, she could learn the truth from him.
The doorbell rang unexpectedly.
Margaret went to answer it, and a moment later, her voice drifted back, laced with clear irritation. “Jasmine, Silas is here to see you.”
When Silas saw Margaret, he froze on the doorstep. “Margaret?”
Though her displeasure was written all over her face, Margaret still fell back on old habits. “Mr. Vance,” she greeted him formally.
“What are you doing here?” Silas asked, his eyes dropping. “And what happened to your arm?”
Remembering the story Jasmine had instructed her to use, Margaret replied, “I slipped and broke it. Mrs. Vance felt sorry for me. She said that since I’m an old-timer who spent so many years working for the Vance family, I should stay here to recuperate and keep myself fed.”
Her words left Silas feeling a potent mix of shame and gratitude. He felt ashamed because he had stood by

and done nothing while Margaret was kicked out of his home, yet he was deeply moved by Jasmines kindness.
When Silas looked up and saw Jasmine’s swollen face again, a fresh wave of heartache hit him He sat down right beside her, his voice incredibly tender.
“Why didn’t you tell me you brought Margaret here?”
Jasmine wasn’t the least bit surprised by his arrival. She kept her face blank and her tone flat. “I just did what was right. I wasn’t looking for credit.”
“I know you did it for me, Jasmine.” Silas said. “Believe me… I see everything you do.”
He sees everything?
Jasmine wanted to laugh in his face.
Did he really? If he actually saw everything, how could he be so utterly heartless? Or was it that he noticed, but simply chose to look the other way?
After all, Silas never did anything without weighing the costs and benefits first.
Silas reached out and gently touched her cheek. “Does it hurt?”
“Theodore gave it everything he had,” Jasmine said. “What do you think?”
Silas drew his hand back, his eyes lingering on her bruised, delicate face. “I’ve told you before not to go head-to-head with people like him. Why won’t you ever listen?”
Though his words were critical, his tone carried a hint of genuine concern. Of course, Jasmine couldn’t care less about his sympathy.
“For three years, I tolerated being bullied by your family,” Jasmine said. “Am I supposed to just take it from a total stranger now, too?”
Silas knit his brows tightly. “You know the Vance and Sterling families are partners right now… Besides, Theodore isn’t exactly a stranger. He is Felicity’s father, after all.””
Jasmine shot him a look of pure, unhidden derision. “Ah. I almost forgot. You and Felicity are the real family here, and I’m the only outsider.”
“Jasmine…” Silas let out a heavy sigh. “Stop talking out of anger, alright?”
“I’m not angry, I’m just stating facts,” Jasmine said. “The moment you stood by and watched me get hit without saying a word, I realized I’ve been wasting my time on you. Silas, let’s get a div―”
The rest of her sentence was cut off by a cold kiss.
