Chapter 112 Just Like a Mother
Chapter 112 Just Like a Mother
Margaret waited until Silas was well out of sight before stepping out.
“Jasmine, are you okay?”

Jasmine lay down on the sofa, resting her head on her arm as a flicker of sadness crossed her eyes.
“I’m fine. Just exhausted.”
Margaret crouched down beside her and, with her one good hand, gently stroked Jasmine’s hair.
“I know the bitterness of having no one who cares, of having to fight through life all on your own.” “It is going to be all right, miss. Everything will get better. Look, you have me here looking after you now, and you have such wonderful friends as Caleb and Sierra who care about you.” “Oh, and Ethan too. He has been very good to you as well.” “So do not be afraid, miss. We are all here. Margaret may be getting on in years, but she will fight with everything she has to protect you.”
Jasmine’s eyes stung, and she nearly cried.
It felt so good to be comforted like this.
It felt like having a mother.
As a child, she had longed countless times for Eleanor to check in on her, to ask how she was doing. She had wished that when she was sick, Eleanor would stroke her hair softly and murmur gentle words of comfort, the way she fussed over Hugh. But… it never once happened.
Over time, her heart had grown numb, and she simply stopped hoping for it.
Her phone buzzed with a text from Ethan.
[Sierra passed her interview. She reports to the office tomorrow.]
It read like an official report.
Jasmine replied: [I know, she already told me.]
Ethan: [Are you okay?]
Jasmine: [Exhausted. Mentally and physically.]
Around Ethan, Jasmine didn’t feel the need to put up a front anymore.
If she was fine, she was fine. If she wasn’t, she wasn’t. Pretending to be okay every single day was exhausting.
Ethan: [Don’t worry too much about your father. I have full confidence in Harrison’s medical skills. As for your complications with the Vance family, there is only so much I can do to help, so you will need to watch your step.]
Jasmine felt a sudden urge to laugh.

It was obvious Ethan wasn’t the type for sweet talk. Sometimes he was as rigid and formal as a schoolteacher
Jasmine: [I can’t thank you enough for everything you’ve done for my dad. As for the Vances, I’ll handle it myself.]
After sending it, she thought about it for a moment and added another message.
[Thank you, Ethan.]
When no reply came, Jasmine put her phone away.
As soon as Silas returned to Kingsley Bay, Gloria hurried over to him.
“Silas, Madeline is waiting for you in your study. You’d better get up there quickly. If you keep her waiting any longer, she’s going to lose her temper again.”
Silas shot her a cold look.
“Since when is it your place to tell me what to do?”
The comparison only made Silas miss the days when Margaret was still with the Vance family. Margaret could be talkative at times, but everything she said came from the same place as an elder looking out for a
younger one.
As for this distant relative who was barely even connected to the family, Silas liked her less with every passing day. If Madeline had not personally put her there, he would have sent Gloria Bennett packing long
ago.
Inside the study, Madeline sat rigidly in her chair.
“What took you so long?”
Suppressing his irritation, Silas replied, “I got caught in some traffic.”
Madeline raised an eyebrow. “You went to see that woman, didn’t you?”
It was only now that Silas noticed. Everyone in the Vance family seemed to refer to his wife by the same name, “that woman.”
“I never expected that apartment would end up giving her a roof over her head,” Madeline continued. “She got off far too easily.”
“Grandmother.” Silas had no patience for any more of this. “Was there something you needed from me?”
“Silas, I want to know if I still have any authority in this house.”
Silas had a good idea where this was going. “Just say what’s on your mind.”
Madeline didn’t mince words. “I want you to divorce Jasmine.”
“And marry Felicity?” Silas asked.
