From across the room. Hugh’s dry voice broke the silence. “Silas, are you actually worried, or are you just putting on a show? I didn’t see you come upstairs once to check on my dad these past couple of days. Weren’t you too busy over on the ninth floor taking care of Felicity and Leo? Seems to me you treat Felicity a whole lot better than you treat Jasmine.”

Silas frowned slightly, biting back his temper. “Leo is my nephew, and since my brother is gone, it’s my responsibility to look after them.”

“Oh, really? I-”

“Hugh!” Jasmine cut him off. “If you don’t have anything useful to do, go home. I’ll watch over Dad.”

There was no telling what other reckless comments might come out of the boy’s mouth next. If he said something awfull that triggered her father, the damage would be irreversible.

Jasmine decided it was best to send him away.

Surprisingly obedient, Hugh got up, dusted himself off, and left.

Silas lingered in the room for a while. With him there, Jasmine and her father couldn’t share any private words, so she decided to prod him into leaving.

“Aren’t you going downstairs?” Jasmine asked.

“Your mother and Chloe are both down there,” Silas replied. “It’s not good to have too many people crowding the room.”

So that was why he had graced his father-in-law with a visit.

Jasmine let it drop. She grabbed an apple and went into the bathroom to wash it, but when she returned. Silas was gone.

“He just took a call,” Arthur explained. “It sounded urgent. He left in such a hurry that he didn’t even say goodbye. Maybe you should call and check if something really happened.”

“No need,” Jasmine said.

There was only one thing that could make Silas rush off in such a frantic panic. It had to be his precious sweetheart. That woman must be causing drama again.

In the Vance family study, Theodore’s face was livid. He raised a hand and slammed it heavily onto the

desk.

Madeline flinched. She started to say something, but thought better of it and kept her mouth shut. Anyone would be furious after losing several billion dollars.

A sudden, vicious look crossed Theodore’s face. “Madeline, I don’t think we can keep your granddaughter- in-law in the Vance family any longer. At the very least, we need to find someone to teach her a lesson.”

Knowing how ruthless Theodore could be, Madeline felt a sudden pang of anxiety. “We should be cautious. She knows far too much about our family.”

Theodore’s eyes hardened. “Then maybe we should just…”

Madeline’s heart skipped a beat. “Absolutely not! If things get out of hand, it will ruin both our families.

Theodore was reluctant to back down. “It’s better than letting her run her mouth and ruin the Vance reputation-not to mention Felicity’s.”

Madeline sighed in frustration. “I thought with Arthur on his deathbed, Jasmine wouldn’t have anyone left to rely on. Who could have guessed this group of friends would suddenly appear out of nowhere, fiercely loyal to her? That’s exactly why we can’t act impulsively. Who knows who else we might offend?”

The more Theodore thought about it, the more resentful he became. “I lost all that money for nothing. can’t just let this go.”

“And what else can we do if we don’t let it go?” Madeline countered. “Besides, we don’t have any proof that the woman was actually behind this.”

Theodore scoffed. “Who else could it be? By the sound of it, Madeline, you’re almost defending her.”

Madeline hadn’t completely lost her senses yet. “I’m not defending her. I just don’t want to blow this completely out of proportion. It wasn’t easy for our families to get to where we are today. We can’t destroy our legacy over a moment of anger.”

Theodore remained silent, but Madeline could tell he wasn’t going to let this go easily.

“I’ll talk to her myself,” Madeline added. “If we can just pay her off to get rid of her, that would be best.”

Unable to sit still any longer, Theodore stood up. “There are things I need to take care of at the office. I’m leaving.”

Madeline didn’t try to stop him.

Theodore ran into Victoria right at the door, the two of them nearly colliding. He didn’t even bother to offer an apology before brushing past her and walking away.

Surprisingly, Victoria didn’t seem angry. Stepping inside, she said to Madeline, “I never expected Jasmine to have the leverage to get Caleb to intercept Theodore’s shipment. She’s certainly bold, going head-to- head with Theodore like that. Doesn’t she know what kind of temper he has?”

Madeline looked worried. “Losing that much money all at once… I doubt Theodore can just swallow his pride. I’m afraid he might do something illegal.”

Victoria dismissed the concern. “What does it matter to us if he breaks the law? If he actually does something, we’ll just distance ourselves from him.”

Madeline shot her a look. “With how intertwined our two families are right now, do you really think it’ll be that easy to cut ties?”
