But seeing the sheer fury in Ethan’s eyes right now made goosebumps erupt across Zack’s skin. He had never seen Ethan look so terrifyingly lethal. And it was all because Jasmine was injured.

Zack couldn’t help but speak up. “Mr. Brooks, Ms. Thorne is going to be fine. Try not to worry too much.”

Ethan held Jasmine protectively against his chest. “Go faster.”

“I can’t,” Zack said helplessly. “I’m already way over the speed limit.”

Taking a deep breath, Jasmine gently pulled back from Ethan’s embrace. “Zack, it’s fine. Take your time Then, turning her attention to Ethan, she added, “The pain is already fading. It was probably just the initial shock of the hit. I feel much better now.”

Ethan’s brow remained tightly furrowed. “What if something is fractured? And you’re—”

Jasmine glanced down at her stomach. “The baby is just like me. Resilient.”

“You didn’t need to take that hit for me,” Ethan said.

Jasmine forced her lips into a weak smile. “I didn’t take it for you. I just pushed you out of the way because I wanted to kick that guy across the yard. I guess I overestimated my own abilities. So don’t feel guilty-I didn’t do it for your sake.”

Ethan’s lips thinned into a tight line. “Why didn’t you listen to me? Why didn’t you stay in the car?”

Jasmine looked deep into his dark, unfathomable eyes. “Because I told you, I couldn’t just sit there and watch you get hurt because of me. They were after me. You just got caught in the crossfire.”

Frustration flashed across Ethan’s face. “It must have been Theodore.”

“Theodore?” Jasmine asked.

“Yes,” Ethan muttered. “I underestimated how vengeful he could be.”

Jasmine was about to press further when she suddenly felt something warm trickling inside her. Panic seizing her, she gripped Ethan’s hand tightly. “The baby…”

Ethan went entirely pale, his voice trembling with sheer panic. “Zack! Hurry!”

Jasmine was taken into the OB-GYN department first.

Outside the examination room, Ethan paced restlessly. Zack watched him, unsure whether he should even try to offer words of comfort.

“Mr. Brooks…” Zack began.

Ethan was completely consumed by guilt. “She was hurt because she was trying to protect me. If anything happens to that baby, I’ll never forgive myself.”

Zack offered a reassuring smile that didn’t quite match his internal worry. “Ms. Thorne is such a wonderful person. Heaven will watch over her. I’m sure everything will be fine.”

Ethan let out a soft, bitter scoff. “Heaven? That’s exactly what you said before my mother passed away.”

Zack didn’t dare say another word. In his current state, Ethan felt completely unapproachable

When the examination room door suddenly swung open, Ethan rushed forward. Zack stood frozen in place, genuinely wondering if this frantic, unraveled man could really be the same composed, refined Mr. Brooks he knew.

The doctor gave Ethan a stern look. “Since she’s pregnant, she shouldn’t be engaging in such strenuous activity. How can you lack such basic common sense? What kind of husband are you?” /

Ethan completely ignored the doctor’s misconception. “How is she? Is the baby alright?”

“Fortunately, there was only a small amount of bleeding,” the doctor replied. “The baby is fine for now, bu she shouldn’t be moving around at all. She needs strict bed rest for the next three days.”

As the doctor wrote out the prescriptions, she continued her stern lecture. “Make sure she takes her medication. It’s best if someone is around to take care of her; do not leave her alone. If another emergency arises and she doesn’t receive immediate treatment, she could easily lose the child.”

Jasmine’s voice came from behind the curtain. “Is bed rest absolutely necessary? It might not be very convenient for me.”

This clearly irritated the doctor. “No matter how busy you are, you have to rest-unless you don’t want this baby anymore. You’re about to be a mother. How can you be so careless? You-”

“Doctor,” Ethan interrupted, stepping in. “It’s my fault, don’t blame her. Rest assured, she will get all the rest she needs.”

The doctor nodded, finally looking somewhat satisfied. “Now that sounds like a father.”

Zack opened his mouth to clarify the situation, but seeing that Ethan didn’t bother to correct her, he thought better of it and shut his mouth.

If Mr. Brooks doesn’t mind, why should I care?

“Doctor, he’s not my husband,” Jasmine clarified.

The doctor simply tapped the paperwork on the desk. “Avoid letting her walk as much as possible. Go get the medication.”

Ethan spoke toward the curtain. “Are you dressed?”

“Yes,” Jasmine replied.

“I’m going to carry you to orthopedics,” Ethan said.

“Can we just go home instead?” Jasmine asked.
