Jasmine felt a pang of guilt.

He was being far more thorough and attentive than she was as the actual mother.

“In that case, let’s skip the X-ray and just keep an eye on it,” the doctor said. “Come back if the pain doesn’t go away. The bruising will likely get worse tomorrow, but don’t worry, it’s nothing serious. Just apply a compress frequently. The main thing is that we can’t prescribe any medication since she’s pregnant.”

Ethan opened his mouth to say something more, but Jasmine stopped him.

“If the doctor says it’s fine, it’s fine. We can trust all those years of medical experience.”

The doctor smiled. “Your husband is just incredibly worried about you. Men who care this much about their wives are hard to come by these days.”

Jasmine gave a helpless smile. “He’s actually just my friend.”

The doctor shot her a knowing look. “Right, your friend. Well, you can let your friend carry you back out now. I need to call the next patient.”

Once they were back in the car, Jasmine’s mind kept racing back to the phrase “bed rest.” Her father was still in the hospital, and her issues with Silas remained unresolved.

With so many problems waiting for her attention, how could she possibly stay in bed?

As if reading her mind, Ethan addressed her concerns. “Your father’s condition has stabilized. As long as he keeps up with his treatment, he’ll make a full recovery and be discharged. As for the situation with the Vance family, it can wait. Three days won’t make a difference.”

Jasmine let out a long sigh. For now, she really had no other choice.

Margaret gasped in horror when she saw Ethan carry Jasmine into the room.

“Jasmine! What on earth happened to you?”

“Of course, right away. You need to lie down-no getting out of bed for the next couple of days, you hear

me?”

“Oh, and just a glass of water for Ethan,” Jasmine added. “Milk might not sit well with his stomach.”

Even hearing this did nothing to ease the tension in Ethan’s brow.

Jasmine looked up at him. “Ethan, please, can you stop being so tense? If you keep acting like this, you’re going to make me anxious.”

Ethan’s gaze drifted to a photograph sitting on the cabinet.

In the picture, a girl of about fifteen or sixteen was leaning affectionately against a middle-aged man. Her innocent, lovely face was bright with a radiant, carefree smile.

Jasmine picked up the frame. “This is the only photo I have with my father.”

In that photo, there was no mother, no younger brother-just her and her dad.

“You look very cute,” Ethan said.

And beautiful. She had clearly been a stunning girl right from the start.

Just then, Ethan’s phone rang. It was an acquaintance of his from the police station.

“They’re all insisting it was just a personal grudge,” the officer reported. “They claim they just dislike Ms. Thorne and acted on their own. No one’s naming a mastermind. It looks like whoever is behind this is dangerous and paid them a fortune to keep their mouths shut.”

After hanging up, Ethan stood in silence for a moment.

When he finally spoke, he simply said, “I’ll go get the ice pack.”

But before he could take a step, Margaret burst back into the room, frantic.
