Ethan’s coffee-brewing skills were something he’d learned from his mother.
His mother was gentle, elegant, and had a heart of gold.
William’s personality, by contrast, had always been a bit more abrasive.
So whenever Ethan and William clashed, it was always his mother who acted as the mediator.
One loved his wife. The other loved his mother. So both father and son had always chosen to back down.
That was how their relationship had grown increasingly harmonious over the years.
But ever since his mother passed, it felt like everything had regressed right back to square one.
Ethan made the coffee with practiced, steady hands.
William sat at the coffee table, watching him every so often.
“Theodore dared to lift a finger against you? Even if he’s dead, he got what he had coming.”
“So, I have no issue with how you chose to deal with him. Who gave him the guts to touch William’s son!”
“It’s just that… it didn’t look like you were only doing it for yourself.”
Ethan lowered his eyes, his expression cool and unreadable.
His long, slender fingers gripped the jade coffee cup, and he moved it toward William without a hint of haste.
William took a small sip.
“Mm. At least your technique hasn’t gotten rusty.”
Ethan spoke evenly. “You looked into her?”
William said, “I found out a few things.”
Ethan replied, “You seem awfully interested in the people around me.”
A chill touched William’s smile. “I’m not interested in the people around you. I’m interested in anyone around you who might have an agenda.”
Ethan’s fingers faltered, just for a second. “Then whoever you sent to investigate her wasn’t very good at their job.”
William raised an eyebrow. “Oh?”
Ethan continued, “She’s not interested in me. And I don’t have any romantic interest in her, either.”

William clearly wasn’t buying it. “You’ve never been this invested in any woman before. You even accelerated the land acquisition plans for her, had Uncle Crawford help out, and pulled strings across both the government and business sectors.”
Ethan met his gaze without flinching. “Zenith Tech needs her.”
William said, “That better not be an excuse.”
Ethan sipped his coffee slowly, as if he hadn’t heard a thing.
William seemed to ease up a little. “If you just want to have a little fun, I can look the other way, but…”
Ethan’s eyes snapped up, his face turning serious. “I won’t use her like that!”
William froze for a second. “Fine. Then I’ll take it as you like her. That’s acceptable, too.”
“But don’t forget-you are an engaged man. The future daughter-in-law of the Brooks family carries the name Wilde.”
Ethan didn’t stay the night. That evening, he drove back to Moonlight Terrace. All the way home, William’s words kept playing over in his head.
“Ethan, remember what you promised your mother before she left us. I hope you haven’t forgotten.”
Yeah. He had obligations to the Brooks family and a promise to keep to his mother. He couldn’t turn his back on either of them.
The car rounded a corner and stopped downstairs in front of one of the buildings. A familiar figure appeared in front of the headlights.
It was Margaret. She was taking a bag of trash down to the bin, her injured arm still resting in a sling.
Ethan hesitated over whether to get out and say hello. He couldn’t guarantee that if he stepped out now, he would still have the willpower not to walk into that building and go see the injured woman upstairs.
Because Theodore had shown genuine remorse and paid off all his back taxes in record time, he was finally granted leniency and released.
Felicity no longer had the energy to care about her child, still lying in the hospital, and ran straight back to her parents’ house.
The moment she saw Theodore, she broke down, throwing herself at him.
“Dad! You scared me to death! I really thought they were never going to let you out!”
Theodore looked utterly drained, a heavy, suffocating coldness hanging over him.
“I thought Caleb was just some pathetic nobody, a fly that couldn’t stir up any real trouble. I never imagined that behind that woman, there were even more powerful people helping her.”
Felicity asked nervously. “Do you have any idea who it is?”

Theodore replied, “Not yet. But whoever it is, their background is definitely no joke.”
