As the star of the day, Chloe was the last to arrive. Two words were written all over her face, not happy All because Ethan had not shown up.
Madeline found her attitude baffling. “It’s your birthday, Chloe. All these elders came out to celebrate with you and brought you lovely gifts. Why the long face?”
“The one who should be here is not, and the ones who should not be here are,” Chloe muttered.
Jasmine figured she was definitely the one who shouldn’t be there.
Madeline glanced at Jasmine, a mocking smile playing on her lips. “Then tell me, who exactly is supposed to be here?”
“Ethan,” Felicity blurted out.
“Ethan?” Madeline searched her memory. “Is this Ethan a classmate of yours?” Silas did a double-take. “Who did you just say?” “Ethan,” Felicity said. “Ethan Brooks, the head of Zenith Tech. The one from Portshire.”
Silas looked utterly incredulous. “You actually invited him to your birthday dinner?”
“Yeah. What’s wrong with that?”
“What’s wrong with that?!” Silas snapped.
“I think it’s perfectly fine.”
“Chloe!” Silas’s temper flared instantly.
Madeline was completely lost. “Silas, do you know this Ethan?”
Silas let out a cold laugh, his teeth gritted. “Know him? He’s the owner of Zenith Tech-the guy who just poached several of my core tech guys.” On top of that, the man had been making major power moves lately, and his company’s momentum was terrifying.
Madeline’s brow furrowed immediately. “Chloe, how do you even know your brother’s rival? And you invited him here? What on earth were you thinking?”
Chloe could not care less. “I do not care what his relationship with you all is. All I know is that I like him. I like him very, very much, and I want to marry him.”
Her sudden confession shocked everyone in the room.
Even Jasmine was stunned. She genuinely had not expected Chloe to just come out and say it like that, so openly, right in front of everyone.
Silas was absolutely furious now. “Listen to me, Chloe. You are not allowed to see this Ethan guy ever

again, and you can forget about having any feelings for him. A relationship between you two is out of the question.”
Chloe refused to back down. “Why can’t we be together? Just because you don’t like him?”
“He’s my direct rival, Chloe. Do you honestly think I’d ever approve?”
“Why should I care whether you approve or not?” Chloe shot back. “Besides, when you married Jasmine. did you care whether I liked her?!”
Sitting at the table, Jasmine rested her head on one hand while idly shredding a napkin with the other. She couldn’t help but sigh mentally-even when she was just trying to mind her own business and enjoy the drama, somehow she still managed to get dragged into the crossfire.
“I do not interfere with your life, so what gives you the right to interfere with mine?!” Chloe snapped.
Silas was completely furious now. “Because I am your brother! Do you not understand that?!”
“And she’s my sister-in-law!” Chloe fired right back, turning to grab Felicity’s arm. “Felicity, you don’t have a problem with me liking Ethan, do you?”
Felicity was instantly put on the spot. If she agreed, she would upset Silas. If she disagreed, she would alienate Chloe. More importantly, she needed Chloe on her side to secure her own footing in the Vance family, so she had to keep her happy.
Trapped in a corner, Felicity stammered, “Well… I…”
“Felicity! Say something!” Chloe demanded, waiting eagerly for her support.
Felicity shot Silas a helpless, pleading look. Recognizing her distress, Silas immediately pulled Chloe back to face him.
“Stop putting Felicity on the spot,” he barked. “Why don’t you go ask Jasmine instead?”
Huh?
Jasmine internally rolled her eyes. Silas was actively trying to paint a target on her back. Then again, it didn’t really matter-everyone in the Vance family already detested her anyway.
“Honestly, I think arguing over whether you’re allowed to like him is completely pointless,” Jasmine said casually. “The real issue is that he probably wouldn’t even look twice at you.”
After all, Ethan was engaged to Judy. Although Jasmine had never met her, she could tell from photos that Judy was a dignified, sophisticated woman. There was no way Ethan would ever fall for a spoiled, bratty girl like Chloe.
Chloe looked ready to pop a blood vessel, but surprisingly, Silas wasn’t pleased with the comment either.
“Chloe is the pride and joy of the Vance family and my own sister,” Silas argued. “Why on earth wouldn’t Ethan look twice at her? His company is a small-time operation. Compared to Nexora Tech, they are worlds apart. He might be doing well right now, but for all we know, his company could vanish from the
