Margaret didn’t hesitate for a second. “Of course! Bring him over. One of my hands might be a bit stiff, but! I’ve still got the other one. I’ll make sure to brew him some nutritious soups to help him build his strength back up.”
Jasmine went into her bedroom and was just about to take a shower when Silas called. The mere thought of the sickening scene in the car made her stomach turn. She instantly declined the call.
But Silas called right back. Jasmine declined it again.
Silas was relentless, completely unwilling to give up. Fed up, Jasmine turned her phone off entirely.
Maybe it was sheer exhaustion, but Jasmine slept straight through the night and woke up on her own. By the time she opened her eyes, it was already past nine in the morning.
She powered on her phone, and a barrage of missed call notifications flooded the screen.
Then she saw the final message.
Jasmine went completely numb, as if plunged into ice water. It felt like a bolt from the blue, hitting her so hard and so fast that even breathing began to ache.
The text was from Hugh. It was only two short sentences, but they ripped her heart out.
[Why aren’t you answering your phone?! Dad is gone.]
Jasmine’s head spun, a loud ringing filling her ears as the room tilted. She nearly collapsed right there. Clawing at the edge of the dresser, she fought to steady her trembling body.
How could this happen?
How was this even possible?
He was perfectly fine yesterday! The doctor had literally said his recovery was going better than expected and that with proper rest, he would make a full recovery.
She had promised herself she would spend the whole day with him today.
She had just planned to bring him here to live with her.
Arthur’s body had already been taken to the funeral home.
Jasmine rushed into the memorial hall. The moment Eleanor saw her, she marched over and slapped her hard across the face. But Jasmine was completely numb; she couldn’t even feel the stinging on her cheek. The pain tearing through her heart was far worse.
Her legs felt heavy as lead. It was like living in a nightmare where everything around her was surreal and empty. Trembling, she reached out, wanting to touch the pale, bloodless face resting beneath the glass

coffin. Her father lay completely still inside the cold glass, his eyes shut tightly, looking as though he had passed away with some lingering, unfulfilled regret.
Jasmine clutched her chest, struggling to breathe.
No!
Her father wasn’t dead!
There was absolutely no way!
This was a dream! It had to be a dream!
Tears streamed down her face like a broken string of pearls as she frantically tried to pry open the glass lid of the coffin.
Beside her, Eleanor screamed, “Jasmine! Are you really going to deny your father his peace even in death”
Jasmine froze instantly. She whipped around, utterly refusing to believe it.
“That’s impossible! My dad was doing fine! How could he be dead? You’re all lying to me!”
Hugh, stripping away his usual reckless attitude, looked genuinely grief-stricken. “Dad is really gone, Jasmine. He passed away last night.”
“No!” Jasmine gripped her chest, every breath tearing at her heart so violently she could barely breathe.
“The doctor said Dad was out of the woods! How could he just die? Was it you?!” Jasmine lunged forward and grabbed Hugh by the collar. “Did you provoke him again? Is that why he-”
Hugh shoved her off.
“What kind of bullshit are you talking about?! Ever since Dad woke up over the last two days, he has done nothing but chew me out. I swallowed my pride and didn’t talk back once, because I was terrified of upsetting him again! Get it through your head, Jasmine-he’s my father too. I might be a screw-up, but I wouldn’t goddamn kill my own dad!”
Jasmine dazed for a moment, and then another thought struck her.
“Then it was you, Eleanor! You must have picked another fight with him! You never loved my dad. You just enjoyed the easy life of having him clean up your messes! You didn’t love him, so you just dumped everything on him without ever caring if it hurt him or broke his heart!”
Jasmine had completely lost her mind to grief.
“Eleanor! You killed him!”
Eleanor’s face went stiff for a fraction of a second.
Then, grinding her teeth, she stormed over and grabbed Jasmine by the hair, her expression so vicious she looked ready to tear her apart.
