Ethan glanced up, his eyes narrowing slightly. “But your behavior is severely damaging my reputation and that of my company. If you refuse to face reality, Ms. Vance, I will no longer show you any professional courtesy.”

Chloe didn’t take the threat seriously at all, continuing to gaze at Ethan infatuatedly. “You are the most remarkable man I’ve ever met. It was love at first sight for me, you know.”

Ethan frowned. “Please conduct yourself with some dignity, Ms. Vance.”

Chloe turned a deaf ear to his words. Unable to contain herself any longer, she stood up, walked over, and leaned in close to him. “Ethan, I’m not exactly chopped liver. Just look at me.”

Ethan immediately stood up and stepped away. “If you continue to act inappropriately, Ms. Vance, I will have security escort you out.”

Chloe slumped back into her seat, thoroughly deflated. Ethan’s blatant avoidance left her feeling both hur and irritated. She had countless suitors; men were always the ones groveling to get her attention.

When had she ever degraded herself like this for someone else? And to make matters worse, he didn’t even appreciate it. It was completely infuriating.

“I was actually hoping we could do a double wedding when my brother, Silas, gets married,” Chloe grumbled disappointedly.

Ethan’s eyes flickered slightly. “If I recall correctly, Mr. Vance is already married. You already have a sister-

in-law.”

Chloe let out a dismissive scoff. “That woman doesn’t deserve him. Silas has already signed the divorce papers anyway.”

Noticing Ethan looking over at her, she assumed he was actually interested in the topic and kept talking.

“Not just anyone can be the young mistress of the Vance family. The Thorne family was already in decline. and now that Arthur is dead, they’ll never recover. There’s no way Silas would ever stay-”

“Ms. Vance!” Ethan interrupted, his voice dropping into a sharp, commanding tone.

Chloe froze. “Ethan? What’s wrong?”

“I don’t have time to sit here and listen to family gossip. I have work to do, so please excuse yourself.” It was a blatant dismissal.

Chloe frowned. “You’re kicking me out already?”

Instead of answering, Ethan unlocked his phone and dialed a number. “Come in and show Ms. Vance out.”

Moments later, Katie walked back into the room.

Chloe was utterly bewildered. “Why do you suddenly look so angry? Did I say something wrong?”

Before Ethan could answer, his phone began to ring. The caller ID read Jasmine.

Ethan walked over to the window and answered it. Jasmine’s voice came through the line, still sounding a bit raspy. “Ethan, are you busy? Are you at the office?”

“Not too busy. I’m at the office.”

“I’m downstairs right now,” Jasmine said. “I wanted to come up and see you, but I wasn’t sure if it was a good time.”

“It’s fine. I’ll come down and get you.”

“Don’t go to all that trouble,” Jasmine replied. “Just tell security to let me through, and I’ll head up myself?

“Wait for me.”

When Ethan turned around, he found Chloe standing right behind him.

“Who are you going down to get?” she demanded.

Ethan frowned. “Ms. Vance, has anyone ever told you that eavesdropping on someone’s phone call is incredibly rude?”

Chloe brushed it off. “I was just curious who you were talking to. You sound way softer when you talk to her than you do with me. Is it that fiancée of yours?”

Ethan glanced at Katie.

Katie took the hint instantly. “Ms. Vance, Mr. Brooks has a meeting coming up. I must ask you to leave

now.”

Chloe pouted, stepping closer to Ethan. “Fine, I’ll go. But can you at least tell me when we’re going to see each other next?”

Ethan had completely run out of patience. “Ms. Vance, I have made myself entirely clear. I suggest you behave yourself. Furthermore, if you keep coming to my company and causing a scene, I will not pull any punches just because you are a woman.”

With that, he turned on his heel and walked out first.

Chloe felt a wave of disappointment, mixed with bitter resentment. She had gone to so much trouble just to see him, and he was already kicking her out after barely a few words.

Turning a resentful glare on Katie, Chloe asked, “Is Ethan always this cold?”

Katie was nothing if not honest. “Not at all. Mr. Brooks is usually very approachable and treats all of us wonderfully.”

Chloe bristled with frustration. “Then why is he so distant with me?!”

Katie pressed her lips together, wisely choosing to keep her mouth shut.
