“She’s been spoiled too much,” Jasmine noted. “She thinks she can get whatever she wants.”
Inside the elevator, Ethan still hadn’t let go of her hand. Realizing how awkward it was, Jasmine gently pulled her hand away.
“I’m sorry,” Ethan said apologetically. “I was just in a hurry. I didn’t want her to see you and cause trouble for you.”
Jasmine let out a long breath. “The fact that I even came to your office today means I don’t care anymore, Ethan…”
“Yeah?”
“I came today because there are a few things I’d like your advice on.”
“Alright. Let’s head to my office and take our time talking.”
As they reached the upper floor, Ethan remembered something. “Do you want to say hi to Sierra? The tech department is just a right turn ahead.”
Jasmine shook her head. “I already texted her. She said they have a team meeting soon, so she’ll come find me later.”
“Fair enough,” Ethan said.
Passing the reception desk, Ethan stopped. “Please bring a glass of milk and some pastries. Not too sweet.”
His secretary, Lauren Mitchell, immediately stood up, her eyes landing on Jasmine.
Elegant, sophisticated, and beautiful-that was Lauren’s first impression of her. A woman’s intuition told the secretary that Mr. Brooks treated this particular woman differently.
“Of course, Mr. Brooks. I’ll get that right away.”
Ethan pushed open the office door.
Jasmine stepped inside and glanced around. Compared to the lavish executive suites of most big bosses. this room was modest, but it was incredibly clean and minimalist. Still, securing a space like this in Future Tower, right in the heart of downtown Rivercrest, required no ordinary financial backing.
As Jasmine was about to sit down, Ethan handed her a throw pillow.
“Put this behind your back. It’ll be more comfortable.”
His thoughtfulness was genuinely touching.
Lauren arrived shortly after with the food and drinks. In addition to the two items Ethan had ordered, she had included a small plate of energy bites, though they looked a little different from the usual store- bought ones.

“I made these oatmeal and nut energy bites myself,” Lauren explained. “They’re packed with nuts and dried fruit, so they’re great for a quick boost. I noticed you looked a little pale, so I thought you might like to try some.”
Jasmine smiled warmly. “What’s your name?”
“I’m Lauren,” she replied respectfully.
“Hi, Lauren. I think we’ll be colleagues very soon, so I look forward to working with you.”
“Welcome to Zenith Tech,” Lauren said. “I’ll let you and Mr. Brooks talk now. Just let me know if you need anything.”
Jasmine watched her leave, then murmured, “She seems sharp and dependable. A really capable secretary.”
“Her family situation is pretty tough, though,” Ethan noted. “Her parents favor her younger brother, and her grandparents are always trying to drain her financially to support him.”
Jasmine looked surprised. “You even know about that?”
“Her grandparents actually came to the office once to make a scene because she wouldn’t give them money. Our legal department had to step in and handle it,” Ethan explained. “She’s been quieter since then, but she’s become even more dedicated to her work.”
Jasmine could easily piece it together. “She probably thought you’d fire her after an incident like that. Instead, you solved her problem and kept her on. She must feel incredibly grateful to you and the company, and since she doesn’t know how else to repay you, she pours all her energy into her job.”
Jasmine then let out a self-deprecating laugh. “Just like me. I’m so indebted to you that I have no idea how I’ll ever pay you back.”
Even working at Zenith Tech didn’t feel like enough to return all his favors.
“You’re different from her.”
Jasmine didn’t read too much into it. “How am I different? I’ll be your employee soon, too.”
Ethan’s eyes flickered, and his lips parted slightly, but he chose to stay silent.
Jasmine picked up an energy bite and took a bite. It was soft, chewy, and quite delicious, so she couldn’t help but eat two more. Once she finished, she reached for a wet wipe to clean her hands.
“I actually came here today to ask for your help,” Jasmine said.
Ethan glanced at the crumbs dusting the corner of her mouth and spoke softly. “Go ahead.”
“I need you to help me find a divorce lawyer. I’m going to file a lawsuit.”
The memories of past injuries and humiliations flooded back all at once. Arthur’s death had been the final straw, completely shattering her.
