Jasmine’s face hardened with absolute resolve. “Of course I have. If we completely tear each other apart, the Vances won’t let me off easy, and neither will the Sterlings. They’ll do everything they can to destroy me-maybe even kill me. But so what? I have nothing left to lose. Why should I care?”

Ethan’s gaze dropped slightly to her stomach. “How can you say you have nothing? You have the baby and/ you have me… you have all of us.”

Jasmine slowly moved her hand to her stomach and let out a heavy sigh. “Maybe I’m just not meant to be a good mother…”

Ethan was silent for a few moments. “Are you sure about this?”

“Yes,” Jasmine said. “I’m not changing my mind.”

“Alright. I do know a very good divorce attorney. I’ll have him contact you directly.”

A wave of unease washed over Jasmine. “I really didn’t want to keep burdening you with my problems. When I was downstairs, I kept wanting to turn around and leave, but..”

Ethan pulled up his contacts and made the call right in front of her.

Jasmine couldn’t hear the response on the other end, but she could hear Ethan perfectly.

“Hey, I need a favor. A friend of mine wants to file for divorce. Just a close friend, she’s actually joining my company after it’s finalized. Don’t say anything like that in front of her, though. I don’t want her to take it the wrong way and get the wrong idea. Right, I’ll text you her number so you can reach out. Thanks, I owe you dinner.”

He hung up the phone. “It’s all set. He’ll call you later today.”

“Thank you,” Jasmine said.

She had already eaten half the plate of energy bites, and the crumbs were still stuck to the side of her mouth.

Ethan couldn’t help but point it out. “You have a little something right there.”

Jasmine reached up to brush it away, but missed.

Ethan instinctively raised his hand to help, but froze mid-air. Jasmine caught the sudden awkwardness in his expression and smiled faintly. “Just point to it on your own face.”

Ethan tapped the corner of his own mouth. “Right here.”

This time, Jasmine managed to wipe it clean. She gave an embarrassed laugh. “These are actually really good.”

“I can tell.” Ethan said. “You seem to love them.”

“Maybe it’s just because I haven’t eaten much the last couple of days. My stomach was completely empty

Ethan frowned slightly. “Are you still blaming yourself for Arthur’s passing?”

The mention of her deepest pain sent a sharp sting through Jasmine’s heart. “If I hadn’t turned off my phone that night, I would have seen my dad one last time.”

As she spoke, her tears spilled over. Some wounds were simply too raw; the moment they were touched. the grief became overwhelming.

“I know he must have wanted to see me before he went. He probably fought for his last breath just to see me one final time. But I…”

Jasmine clenched her hands together so tightly that her nails dug deep into the back of her skin. It was physical pain was the only way she could manage the agony inside.

as if

Ethan felt a sudden tightness in his chest. He wanted to say something to comfort her, but he couldn’t find the words. He wanted to do something, but he knew he shouldn’t. If he crossed that line, he wouldn’t be able to control his own feelings anymore.

Yet, looking at her delicate hand, already turning red from the pressure of her own fingernails, Ethan couldn’t hold back. He gently pried her hands apart and held one of them in his.

“Listen to me.”

Jasmine looked up, her vision blurred with tears.

Ethan took a tissue and softly blotted the tears from her face. “You didn’t do anything wrong. This isn’t your fault. Life is just like that sometimes-it’s never perfect, and it always leaves us with regrets. Just look

at me…”

He had a secret locked away in his heart, one he had never shared with anyone. Today was the first time.

“Years ago, I got into a massive fight with my dad and stormed out of the house. My mom went out to look for me and got hit by a car. She could never walk properly again after that. Carrying that guilt has been the greatest pain of my life. Even on the day she died, I was still apologizing to her. But she told me… she was just glad it was her who got hit, and not me.”

Jasmine gradually began to calm down. It turned out everyone really did have their own hidden struggles. The wealthy heir standing before her had eyes full of an unspeakable sorrow and self-reproach. To comfort her, he had willingly reopened his own deepest wound.

Jasmine placed her free hand gently over the back of his. “It’s in the past now. Things will get better.”

It was a clumsy attempt at consolation. She wasn’t sure if she was trying to comfort him or reassure herself.

They locked eyes, silently offering each other strength, until a sudden knock on the door broke the silence. The lingering, intimate warmth between them vanished instantly, and their hands quickly parted.

Sierra walked in, immediately sensing a strange vibe in the room.
