Because their plans had shifted, they didn’t head back to Rivercrest. Instead, they found a hotel nearby to stay the night.
With the heavy rain and landslides, plenty of travelers were stranded and started searching for places to stay around the area.
The hotel was suddenly fully booked.
The front desk agent told them only one room was left-but it had two double beds.
Jasmine glanced back at the dark, stormy night outside and turned to Ethan. “Is that okay with you?”
Ethan gave a light smile. “As long as you’re fine with it.”
Jasmine murmured to herself, “I’m pretty much a divorced woman now. Why would I even hesitate?”
As the clerk handed over the key card, she added with a friendly tone, “If you’d prefer, you can always push the two beds together.”
It hadn’t felt like a big deal before, but after the young woman’s remark, Jasmine suddenly felt awkward.
Ethan took the key, completely unbothered. “Thanks.”
The room was at the very end of the hallway.
Looks like business really is booming tonight.
He swiped the card and they stepped inside.
“Which bed do you want?” Ethan asked.
Jasmine scanned the room. “The one by the window. I’m used to sleeping near the window.”
“Alright,” Ethan replied.
The room wasn’t spacious-nothing like a five-star hotel.
Even the beds looked narrower than usual.
Jasmine couldn’t help worrying whether Ethan, with his six-foot-two frame, would even fit comfortably.
The room grew quiet all of a sudden.
They each took a seat on the edge of their own beds, not saying a word.
When their eyes met, they both smiled faintly.
“I’ll step out for a bit,” Ethan said. “You go ahead and shower. I’ll come back when you’re done.”

Jasmine had considered skipping a shower and sleeping in her clothes, but she knew she wouldn’t be able to rest if she didn’t freshen up.
She’d packed a change of clothes when she left home, planning for the trip-she just hadn’t expected the temperature to drop this sharply.
Seeing Ethan move toward the door, she felt a pang of guilt. “Don’t go outside-it’s too cold. You can stay in here. It’s not like you can see into the bathroom anyway. I’ll be fully dressed when I come out.”
Ethan paused briefly. “Okay, then.”
Jasmine went into the bathroom.
As she closed the door, she instinctively reached to lock it, but held back, not wanting Ethan to hear the click and think she didn’t trust him.
When she came out after her shower, she found Ethan lying on top of the covers, still fully dressed, fast asleep.
He was on his side, his brow slightly furrowed, looking genuinely worn out.
Jasmine realized she hadn’t even asked whether the trip had been rough on him-or how he’d managed to track her down in such awful conditions.
She didn’t dare ask.
Knowing too much might only make her feel guiltier.
But one thing she had to admit.
As difficult and draining as the day had been, from the moment Ethan showed up, her emotions had slowly steadied.
He wasn’t just her good luck charm-he felt like an anchor.
Yet Jasmine also knew very well that she couldn’t allow herself to lean on him emotionally, even a little.
That wouldn’t be right.
Her throat felt dry, and she let out a soft cough.
Ethan’s eyes opened right away.
He sat up. “Are you getting sick?”
Jasmine brushed her damp hair back. “No, my throat’s just dry.”
Ethan got up to pour water from the kettle.
“It’s freshly boiled-be careful, it’s hot.”

Jasmine took a small sip just to moisten her throat.
Ethan noticed her wet hair and frowned slightly. “Why didn’t you dry it?”
“Didn’t feel like it,” Jasmine replied. “My back’s a little sore.”

“You should’ve brought someone with you,” Ethan said, his tone gentle but concerned. “Driving all this way, alone wasn’t wise. You keep forgetting you’re pregnant.”
“I didn’t forget,” Jasmine said softly. “I just got so excited when I heard my birth mom might still be alive… I had to come right away.”
But then-
Her heart squeezed again.
She hoped their guess was right.
She hoped, after twenty-eight years of longing, life might finally show her some kindness.
Ethan walked into the bathroom.
Jasmine assumed he was going to wash up, but he came back out holding a hairdryer.
“You can’t sleep with your hair wet,” he said plainly. “Let’s get it dry.”
He
said it so matter-of-factly it was almost amusing.
Jasmine smiled and reached for the dryer.
Ethan held it gently aside. “You said your back hurts. I’ll do it.”
Jasmine hesitated.
