Chapter 167 A Calculated Pause
Hugh had the good sense to stay quiet.
He knew Eleanor well enough to take her threats seriously.

“And don’t forget-your father’s death is partly on you too! You were right there that night when I was arguing with him. Too busy with your video games to even say a word to calm things down.
“If you’d spoken up just once, maybe he wouldn’t have had that heart attack from the stress!”
Hugh muttered under his breath, defensive.
“How is that my fault? Mom, you’re the one who-”
A sharp look from Eleanor shut him up.
He glanced helplessly toward the front door-Jasmine had already disappeared from view.
But the image of her leaving lingered in his mind.
Outside, Jasmine stood for a while in front of the closed gate.
Behind her lay only bitterness and regret, so she didn’t turn back.
In her hand, she clutched the slip of paper Eleanor had given her-an address to a countryside house in
the southern suburbs, where her mother was supposedly being cared for.
The only relief Jasmine felt was that she’d had enough leverage to keep her mother alive.
Otherwise, she dreaded to think what might have happened.
Ethan was still waiting in the car.
Jasmine opened the passenger door and slid in, her eyes glistening with tears.
She unfolded her palm to show him the crumpled note.
“Ethan…”
He took the paper from her, his fingers brushing against her ice-cold skin.
“Your hands are freezing.”
Jasmine pressed a hand to her chest.
“It’s my heart that’s cold.”
Then she bit down hard on her lip, fighting back a sob.
Ethan’s chest tightened. Before he could stop himself, he pulled her into a hug.

Chapter 167 A Calculated Pause
Jasmine broke down crying.
“Ethan, I… I really have no home now. After this, it’s just me.”
He rubbed her back gently, voice soft.

“The people who walk away were never really yours. The ones who are meant to be in your life will find their way to you.”
Meant to be in her life?
What did that even mean anymore?
Her phone buzzed-an unknown number.
Jasmine pulled herself together and answered.
After hanging up, she sat quietly for a moment.
“That was the divorce lawyer you referred me to.” She paused. “Ethan.”
“Yeah?”
“I want to hold off on filing for a few days.”
Worried he might misunderstand, she quickly added, “It’s not that I’ve changed my mind. I just want to pick the right time.”
“The right time?” Ethan echoed.
“Yes.”
She wanted it done cleanly, and she wanted to keep the advantage.
Ethan didn’t press further. “Okay. Whenever you’re ready.”
Even though he didn’t ask, she explained anyway.
“I’ll file once Eleanor finalizes the sale of Thorne Enterprises to Silas.”
Ethan caught on immediately, and a flicker of admiration showed in his eyes.
“No wonder you’re being groomed as the future of Zenith Tech. You’ve always had a sharp mind.”
She was strategic, clear-headed-not one to act on impulse. She knew how to choose the moment to strike back effectively.
Good. This is the unstoppable Storm I remember.
Jasmine pressed a hand to her aching lower back.

Chapter 167 A Calculated Pause
All the running around, emotional strain, and stress had left her completely drained.
Ethan noticed, and it bothered him.
There were things he couldn’t say outright, so he kept it friendly.
“Take today to rest. You can go tomorrow. At this point, I’m sure your mom is safe.”
Jasmine shook her head.

“If I don’t go today, I won’t sleep tonight. I’d rather see for myself. Once I know she’s okay, I’ll be at peace- no matter how tired I am.”
“But your…”
Jasmine knew what he meant. She rested a hand on her stomach.
“He’s been quiet these last couple of days. Maybe he senses what I’m going through. And I’ve been taking the prenatal vitamins regularly. It should be fine.”
“Still-”
“Ethan.” Jasmine leaned back in the seat and turned her head toward him, her expression almost pleading. “Let me go. Please?”
Ethan finally gave in under her earnest, hopeful gaze.
“Alright. I’ll take you. But we’re getting you something to eat first.”
Before she could object, he added, “For the baby.”
Jasmine nodded quietly. “Okay. We’ll eat, then go.”
Ethan’s compliance made her feel a little guilty.
She’d at least slept last night.
He’d probably been up most of it, then drove all the way back to Rivercrest alone.
The thought weighed on her.
“Maybe you should go home and rest,” she said. “I can manage on my own. I don’t want to drag you through all this.”
