Chapter 202 A Secret to Keep
Chapter 202 A Secret to Keep
He never asked for anything in return.
Sierra let out a long, steady breath.
So, the question that had been nagging at her already had an answer.
Ethan really did have feelings for Jasmine-and he’d felt that way for a long time.
For once, Caleb dropped his usual casual tone and spoke to Sierra seriously.

“Look, no one was supposed to know about this. Not even Jasmine. But you figured it out. I need you to keep it quiet. Don’t say a word to her. Can you do that?”
“I don’t understand… Why would he…” Sierra murmured, more to herself than to him.
Caleb caught the strange note in her voice.
“Hey, is it really that hard to believe? What’s with that look?”
“Nothing. It’s just… surprising, that’s all.”
Sierra took a moment to collect herself, waiting until the swirl of emotions settled before she spoke again.
“Anyway, Jasmine’s divorced now. And he likes her. Why doesn’t he just tell her?”
Caleb let out a dry laugh.
“Easy for you to say. What about his fiancée? And all the responsibilities he’s carrying-the promises he’s made? What’s he supposed to do, just dump them all?”
“So what if he did? What’s wrong with choosing love?”
“And you think Jasmine would be okay with that?” Caleb shook his head. “If Ethan walked away from everything he’s committed to, just for love, Jasmine would probably lose all respect for him.”
Throwing away every duty, every promise-especially the one he’d made to his mother-for the sake of romance… Any woman with a clear head would hesitate.
And a woman who’d already been through a failed marriage? She’d be more clear-headed than most.
It hit Sierra like a splash of cold water. Finally, it clicked.
She sighed softly. “Yeah… you’re right. There are things besides love that matter.”
The room fell quiet for a moment.
Then Sierra spoke up again, curiosity nudging her.
“Can I ask you something?”

“Shoot.”
“You like Jasmine a lot too. Doesn’t it… bother you?”
Caleb gave an awkward half-smile.
“What am I supposed to do, turn on Ethan because of it?”
Sierra’s lips curved slightly. “Knowing you, probably not.”
“Oh? You sound pretty sure.”
“On the surface, you act all reckless and flirty. But deep down, you’re loyal.”
Caleb set down what he was holding and leaned a little closer.
“Are you secretly into me or something?”
Sierra jabbed him with her elbow.
“In your dreams!”
He chuckled, then grew serious again.
“Alright, back to the point. Straight answer: can you keep this secret or not?”
By then, Sierra had regained her composure. With a slightly annoyed tone, she said, “No.”
Caleb frowned.
“If this gets out, we might not even be friends anymore. You’re not that clueless, are you? What would you gain from it?”
Sierra picked up a nearby book and threw it in his direction-but carefully aimed so it wouldn’t actually hit him.
“Caleb, what do you take me for? Some kind of drama-starter? Or an idiot with no common sense? Do you really think I don’t know what should stay quiet?”
Caleb grinned. “Who knows? Maybe you’re secretly carrying a torch for Ethan.”
Sierra went completely still. For a long moment, she didn’t say a word.
Caleb thought he’d actually upset her.
He quickly moved closer, backpedaling. “I’m kidding, totally kidding. You’re not really mad, are you?”
Sierra looked up. Her eyes were glistening.
Caleb was taken aback.

“Hey, what’s wrong? It was just a joke.”
Sierra’s lips trembled. “Caleb… you’re so annoying!”
He apologized faster than he’d ever done anything.

“I’m annoying, absolutely the worst, I’m sorry, I’m sorry. Really, I was just messing around. Our Sierra would never secretly crush on anyone, right?”
That only made it worse. Sierra looked like she was about to break into tears.
Then it dawned on Caleb.
Something wasn’t adding up.
The Sierra he knew was tough-the kind who’d rather fight than cry. She’d been around when it came to dating, and she’d always been the one to end things, never the one left heartbroken.
This reaction was way out of character for her.
A thought stirred in Caleb’s mind, and his expression turned earnest.
“Sierra. Don’t tell me you’re crying because I hit a nerve.”
She sniffed.
“What nerve? That’s ridiculous.”
The words slipped out before Caleb could stop them. “You’re in love with Ethan.”
The object in Sierra’s hand clattered to the floor.
Caleb just stared at her, not saying another word.
Well, this was interesting.
