Chapter 208 The Loss

Chapter 208 The Loss

Ethan paused for a moment, then decided not to press any further.

It was the second time she had endured the torturous wait.

Jasmine could no longer put into words what she was feeling.

She almost wished she were the one lying in there-anything to escape this living nightmare.

Sierra kept whispering prayers, pleading with God to let Anna pull through against all odds.

She knew Jasmine couldn’t bear to lose anyone else.

The person behind those doors was all the family Jasmine had left.

When the emergency room lights finally dimmed, a team of doctors stepped out.

Their expressions alone made Jasmine too afraid to approach.

Ethan walked forward.

“How is she, Doctor?”

The doctor shook his head regretfully.

“We did everything we could. Her injuries were too severe.”

Ethan glanced back at Jasmine.

She stood completely still, frozen in place. No tears, no sound-as if her soul had been ripped away, leaving nothing but a hollow shell.

Slowly, she walked into the trauma room.

Anna’s body lay covered by a white sheet.

One of the doctors spoke gently, “You may want to contact a mortuary cosmetologist. The deceased…”

He didn’t need to finish. Everyone understood.

Jasmine stood before her mother’s body like a ghost, her hand trembling as she reached for the sheet.

Just then, a hand with long, elegant fingers gently stopped her.

Ethan’s voice, soft yet firm, spoke near her ear.

“Don’t look. Not like this, okay?”

Jasmine shook her head, still trying to lift the sheet.

Ethan drew her into his arms.

“Listen to me. After they’ve prepared her-made her look peaceful-then you can see her.”

Jasmine’s heart had turned to ice.

“I know you’re strong,” he murmured, “but you’re carrying a child now. Let’s not expose the baby to this.”

In the end, she nodded silently.

The arrangements that followed felt painfully familiar.

This time, it was just the four of them seeing Anna off-quiet, private, exactly as Jasmine knew her mother would have wanted. No fuss, no crowd.

Maybe in the next life, she thought, Anna would find the peace she rarely had in this one.

Even after Anna’s ashes were laid to rest, Jasmine hadn’t shed a tear.

Her silence was unnerving.

Sierra held her tightly, heart aching.

“Jasmine, please… just cry. Don’t hold it all in. You’ll break.”

Caleb stroked her hair and, for once, used the tender nickname he’d reserved for their childhood.

“Jasie, if it hurts, let it out. I’m right here. I’ve got you.”

Jasmine gently pulled away from Sierra.

When she finally spoke, her voice was so hoarse it was barely recognizable.

“I need to see who did this.”

At the police station, a young man in expensive but tacky streetwear answered the officers’ questions with bored indifference.

A staff member quietly told Jasmine he was the driver-the one who had hit her mother.

On the table lay scene photographs.

Jasmine’s eyes skimmed over them, then fixed on the car and its license plate.

She knew that plate better than anyone.

It was Chloe’s car-a red Ferrari, a birthday gift from Silas.

But after too many violations last year, Chloe’s license had been suspended. The car had been sitting in the garage ever since.

So what was it doing here?

Jasinine scanned the room instinctively.

That was when she spotted Chloe slouched in the corner.
