For as long as she had known Ethan, it was the first time Jasmine had ever heard his voice turn so sharp and cold.
“You were willing to risk your own health-and the life of your unborn child-just to get to the truth?
“If something happened to you, what good would the truth even do?”
Jasmine drew a slow breath.
“I just needed to do it my way. And it worked. At least now I know for sure-Chloe was the one behind the wheel that night.”
“And then what?” Ethan’s tone was edged with frustration. “No cameras, no witnesses, no physical proof. You’re back to square one. Were you planning to pull the same stunt again? Do you really think Silas is that stupid?”
Jasmine’s fingers tightened around the hem of her shirt.
“I’ll figure something out… I don’t have your resources, but I’ll manage.
Ethan let out a quiet, weary sigh.
“I already told you I’d handle it. That means I can help you. Why couldn’t you just wait? Do you have any idea how dangerous-”
“I don’t need it!”
The words burst out before she could hold them back. Ethan went still.
“I don’t need you swooping in to fix everything every single time. It makes you all seem like… like you’re on some higher level. And what does that make me? Like I’m incapable of handling my own life.”
The air between them went cold.
A chill seemed to spread through the room.
Jasmine immediately regretted it.
“I’m sorry… I didn’t-”
But Ethan was already turning away.
She watched him walk off, guilt tightening in her chest.
Jasmine, what is wrong with you?
After everything he’s done, you go and throw that in his face?
For a brief moment, as he left, she had seen the hurt in his eyes-clear and sharp. It stung to even 1/4

remember it.
She wished she could take it all back.
“Ethan…”
He paused but didn’t turn. “Take care of her,” he said to Caleb, his voice low.
Caleb glanced at Ethan’s expression and felt a ripple of concern.
“Wait for me in the car,” Caleb told him. “I’ll be out in a minute.”
Sierra hurried after Ethan into the hallway.
“Mr. Brooks.”
He turned.
“Yes?”
“Jasmine… she didn’t mean what she said. She’s under a lot of pressure right now. Please… go easy on her. Don’t hold it against her.”
Ethan gave a slight nod. “Mm.”
He took a few steps, then halted again. Without facing her, his voice came out heavy.
“Take a few days off. Stay with her.”
Long after he had left, Sierra remained where she stood.
That kind of protectiveness… it felt almost too personal.
Caleb shook his head and gently tapped Jasmine’s forehead.
“Running your own show, huh? You’re usually so level-headed, What were you thinking this time? If Silas had decided to get rough, you really think that little pocketknife would’ve saved you?”
Jasmine was still drowning in regret.
“I know… I’m sorry.”
“Don’t apologize to me. Talk to Ethan. What you said back there… it hit him hard. You realize that, right?”
“I do…”
“Then why say it?”
“It just came out…”

“Eyer since he met you, Ethan’s put more into your troubles than his own. You have no idea how much he’s done behind the scenes to make things right for you.”
He hesitated.
Some things weren’t really his to tell.
One person quietly caring, quietly doing-and the other completely unaware.
After a moment, Caleb waved a hand.
“You know what, never mind. You two need to sort this out yourselves. But just so you know, Ethan didn’t look okay when he left. He’s upset.”
With that. Caleb headed outside.
Ethan was leaning against the car, a cigarette between his fingers.
Caleb walked over. “Give me one.”
Ethan handed him the whole pack.
Caleb didn’t bother with his own lighter-he just leaned in and lit his cigarette from the tip of Ethan’s.
After taking a few slow drags, he finally spoke.
“I’ve noticed you smoking more lately.”
Ethan replied flatly, “Not really.”
“Still bothered by what happened?”
“No.”
“You don’t look fine.”
Ethan stared at the glowing end of his cigarette, his gaze distant.
“I was thinking about what she said.”
“Which part?”
“The last part.”
Caleb frowned. “She was angry. You’re taking it to heart?”
