“Sometimes, you’ve got to rise up and stand tall before you can really shut down the ones who look down

on you.

“Maybe this whole thing will change her-for good.”

Caleb finally got it.

“Ethan, you really thought this through. Still, we can’t just drop what happened with Chloe.”

Ethan glanced up toward the lit apartment window.

“Let her handle her own payback.”

For a while, Sierra didn’t know what to say either.

She stayed with Jasmine for a long time-so long that the last of the evening light slipped through the window and fell over the figure sitting quietly in the chair.

The tear tracks had been wiped away. All that was left was a stillness, calm and unshaken.

No one could tell what had been running through her mind. When she finally spoke again, her voice was steady.

“Sierra, I was wrong.”

Sierra took her hand. “Hey, don’t be so hard on yourself—”

“I was wrong. About a lot of things.”

Her heart felt shattered, her stomach twisting. Whether it was morning sickness or the ache in her chest, Jasmine felt like she might be sick.

But she held it together.

Her voice, cool and measured, filled the quiet room.

“I was wrong to fall for Silas. Wrong to marry him, knowing he didn’t love me.

“The Vances didn’t crush my dignity-I did that myself. I threw it away. I lowered myself, gave up everything for what I thought was love.

“I was so naive. I treated love like it was everything. I thought if I just loved hard enough, I’d get something back-some warmth, some kindness.

“Three years… not a lifetime, but long enough. I wasted three years…”

Jasmine let out a heavy sigh. Her eyes drifted toward the window.

The sunset was gorgeous.

But to her, right then, it just looked bleak.

This wasn’t how her life was supposed to be.

“Sierra, I can’t keep living like this. It’s time I got back to where I belong…”

Eleanor looked down on her.

The Vances looked down on her.

They treated her mother’s death like some trivial incident-brushed it aside without a second thought.

The reason they could treat her like that was simple: she had no status, no influence, no connections.

Fine.

Then Jasmine would rely on herself. She’d stand somewhere they could never reach.

She’d make them look up to her.

She’d get justice for her mother-on her own terms.

Sierra wrapped an arm around her.

“Jasmine, take a few days and rest. Mr. Brooks just told me he’s giving me time off to stay with you.”

Hearing Ethan’s name, another wave of guilt washed over Jasmine.

“What I said to him earlier was completely out of line.”

Sierra reassured her, “He won’t stay mad at you.”

Jasmine shook her head.

“It’s not about whether he’s angry. I just feel like a terrible person.

“I keep pulling him into my mess. He got upset earlier because he was worried about me-afraid something might happen. And because I was in a mood, I took it out on him…

“Sierra, am I just… a horrible person?”

Sierra’s heart ached for her.

“No. I know you didn’t mean it. Everyone has their moments. Letting it out is better than keeping it in.”

But when Jasmine remembered the look on Ethan’s face as he walked away, she felt like she couldn’t breathe.

“But I shouldn’t have directed it at him. Why should he have to deal with my negativity?”

Sierra pressed her lips together.

“Jasmine, Mr. Brooks, he…”

When Sierra didn’t finish, Jasmine turned to look at her.

“What about him?”

“He…”

The words were right there, but Sierra held back.

Like Caleb said-if they pushed through that thin barrier between them, would they even be able to stay friends?

Jasmine pressed gently, “Sierra, is there something you wanted to tell me?”

Sierra offered a faint smile.

“No. I was just going to say that Mr. Brooks is a really good guy. He probably won’t dwell on it. Worst case, you can talk to him in person and apologize.”

Jasmine nodded. “I will. But you don’t need to take time off for me. Go to work.”

“How can I do that? Mr. Brooks told me to stay with you. Everyone’s worried.”

“Don’t worry about me. I need a few days to sort things out in my head.

Sierra hesitated. “But Mr. Brooks said-”

“Sierra, listen to me. Go to work. Don’t let me mess up your actual job. Just let me be alone for a little while, okay?”
