Chapter 240 Fly Into the Flame

Jasmine shrugged indifferently. “Not my problem.”

“He could track you down over this, you know.”

“So let him.”

They were in the same business now, and Rivercrest wasn’t exactly a sprawling metropolis. Running into Silas was inevitable-just not as his wife anymore. Now they’d be competitors.

A flicker of sadness passed through Vivienne’s eyes. “He has already taken you to heart.” So much so tha even when he was frantically wanting her body, it was Jasmine’s name on his lips.

Jasmine gave a smile that did not reach her eyes. “Silas is a heartless person. How could he truly take anyone to heart? It is nothing more than the unwillingness to accept a sudden loss.”

Vivienne was quiet for a beat. “Maybe you’re right.”

The conversation stalled there, with nowhere left to go.

“I won’t keep you,” Vivienne said finally. “Thanks again for hearing me out.”

Jasmine hesitated. “You…”

Vivienne gave a faint smile. “You want to ask whether I have fallen in love with Silas, do you not?”

Vivienne didn’t miss a beat. “From the first moment I saw him.”

Jasmine had to respect the honesty, even coming from someone who’d played a part in wrecking her marriage.

“It hit me the second I laid eyes on him. No logic to it-just pure feeling.”

Jasmine felt nothing. “He does have that effect on women.”

Hadn’t she fallen just as hard at first sight? Now, even looking at him twice felt like too much.

“I met him the day you got married. He and Ms. Sterling weren’t together yet,” Vivienne explained. “He came into Eclipse to drown his sorrows over her. That’s how we ended up talking. And not long after… well. you know.

“I was the first one to come between you. That’s why I wanted to say I’m sorry.”

Jasmine’s tone was calm. “No apology needed. If it hadn’t been you, it would’ve been someone else. That Ms. Sterling had already gotten to him long before.”

Vivienne felt a surprising surge of respect. “You’re really level-headed about this. I admire that.”

“If Silas hadn’t cheated and broken my heart, I’d probably still be that lovesick fool,” Jasmine said with a self-deprecating laugh. “Took me way too long to figure out how wrong I was.

There’s one thing I feel I should tell you, Ms. Monroe

“Go ahead.”

“Silas isn’t right for you. Actually, scratch that-he isn’t right for any woman. To him, women are like accessories. Interchangeable.”

“I know.” Vivienne replied softly.

Jasmine was slightly taken aback. “You know, and yet you still…” Vivienne said. “I only want to love him I have no demands or expectations of him whatsoever.”

Jasmine was stunned. That was next-level devotion-even more than what she’d felt in her worst

moments.

“Then I guess what I said was pointless. Good luck to you.”

Vivienne watched her walk away, the gentle smile slowly fading from her eyes.

Jasmine headed back toward the private room and noticed Ethan hadn’t gone far. He was leaning against the wall a little way down the corridor, waiting.

A soft warmth spread in her chest, and she quickened her steps.

“Why didn’t you go in?”

“Just needed a minute,” Ethan said casually.

Jasmine nodded. “Okay.”

“Everything settled?”

“Yeah.”

Her thoughts drifted for a second. “Ethan?”

“Hmm?”

“Do you think love is just… irrational like that? You know it’s gonna burn you, but you fly right into the flame anyway.”

Ethan held her gaze, a faint, unreadable shadow in his eyes.

Jasmine laughed awkwardly. “Not talking about me. Well, maybe a little.”

Hadn’t she done exactly that-flung herself into the fire for Silas?

“Vivienne just told me she’s in love with him. I wanted to give her some decent advice, but I know it won’t change anything.”
