Chapter 28 Leveraging the Scandal for Assets

The second she walked in, Victoria’s screeching voice echoed through the hall.

“These shameless reporters! Do they not have enough money for their own funerals? How can they print such lies!”

That was Victoria for you.

In public, she was a sophisticated lady of high society.

In private, she was a common shrew with zero class.

Jasmine was used to it.

She’d seen the headlines before she arrived.

It was the top trending scandal of the day.

The headlines were juicy.

“Widowed and Lonely? Or a Secret Affair? Eldest Vance Son and Sister-in-Law Caught in Illicit Scandal. Is the ‘Posthumous’ Heir Actually Silas Vance’s Son?”

Jasmine couldn’t help but be impressed.

The reporter Sierra had found was a master of the trade.

When Victoria saw Jasmine, her rage immediately shifted targets.

“Something this big happens and you act like it’s nothing! Are you enjoying seeing the Vance family as a laughingstock?”

Jasmine thought, Of course I am.

But outwardly, she forced a worried expression.

“Grandmother, Mother, what happened? Silas just told me to come home; he didn’t give me any details.”

Victoria shoved a tablet into her hands. “Are you blind? Read it yourself!”

Jasmine made a show of reading the news thoroughly.

When she finished, she looked horrified. “How could this happen! Silas was just invited for a televised interview. This is going to destroy his reputation.”

Earlier that year, Silas’s firm had launched an AI system that had been adopted by major banks. It had made Zenith Tech famous and sent the stock price soaring.

Silas was making money hand over fist and had become a media darling.

And this interview wasn’t just local; it was a national broadcast.

Silas took it very seriously.

And Jasmine knew exactly how seriously.

If she hadn’t, she wouldn’t have planned this.

If she didn’t corner Silas, he’d never give her what she wanted.

Victoria’s face was red with fury.

“Do you think we don’t know that! With this scandal, who knows if the interview is even happening. It’s direct blow to the company image. The stock is already tanking.”

Madeline tapped her cane on the table. “Enough! Stop the useless talk! We need to fix this right now!”

Madeline looked at Silas, who was sitting silently in his chair.

“Silas, set it up. We’re holding a press conference tomorrow to clear this up.”

Silas looked miserable. “Words are cheap. A forced denial will just make it look like I have something to hide.”

“It’s the only option,” Madeline insisted. “If we don’t, it’ll only get worse.”

Silas shot Jasmine a resentful look.

“Grandmother,” Jasmine spoke up. “This is partly my fault.”

Madeline didn’t follow. “What do you mean?”

“Actually, last night, Silas was with me at first. But we had a little disagreement, so I went back to my parents’ house.”

Madeline frowned. “What kind of disagreement would make you leave in the middle of the night?”

Jasmine sighed.

“Speak up!”

“If you must know the truth,” Jasmine said in a low voice. “It was about Moonlight Terrace.”

“What does a little apartment have to do with anything!”

To Madeline, a thousand-square-foot apartment was a rounding error.

Jasmine looked at Silas with a hurt expression, but her words were for Madeline.

“Silas forgot my birthday, and to make it up to me, he promised to give me that apartment as a gift…”
